World Series 2014: Aaron Lewis apologizes for botched national anthem image

The national anthem can't stay out of the spotlight in the 2014 World Series.

Prior to Game 3, the American flag ripped straight down its middle, creating a rather embarrassing pregame scene. The embarrassment on Sunday was self-inflicted for Staind singer Aaron Lewis. Just listen.

Yikes. At least he rebounded to finish the thing out.

Lewis heard about it on Twitter — and even reshared some of the more nasty and profane hate he received — but he apologized for the error.

A statement on Lewis' website reads as follows: "All I can say is I'm sorry and ask for the Nation's forgiveness. My nerves got the best of me and I am completely torn up about what happened. America is the greatest country in the world. The Star-Spangled Banner means so much to so many, including myself. I hope everyone can understand the intensity of the situation and my true intent of this performance. I hope that the Nation, Major League Baseball and the many fans of our national pastime can forgive me."
