The Royals were trying to build on the momentum they gained an inning earlier. Giants second baseman Joe Panik — and replay — put a stop to that.
With Lorenzo Cain on first base in the third, Eric Hosmer hit a sharp grounder up the middle. Panik dived to his right and made a sensational backhanded snag, then flipped the ball with his glove to shortstop Brandon Crawford, forcing Cain. Crawford then threw quickly to first to get Hosmer, who dived headfirst. Hosmer initially was called safe by first base umpire Eric Cooper.
