Stephen Drew signs one-year deal with Red Sox image

Stephen Drew is right back where he started.

The free-agent shortstop, who couldn't find a taker during the offseason or the season's first seven weeks, has re-signed with the Boston Red Sox, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports. Drew, 31, played for Boston's World Series-winning squad last year.

The veteran rediscovered his swing in Boston after struggling in 2011 and 2012. During the regular season, he posted a .253/.333/.443 slash line with 13 HR, 67 RBIs and a 3.1 WAR. His hitting went south in the postseason as he went 6-for-54 (although he did have a big home run in Game 6 of the World Series).

The market for Drew was non-existent for Drew after the Red Sox made a qualifying offer. No team was willing to give up a draft pick to sign the solid but hardly spectacular shortstop.

With 3B Will Middlebrooks injured, it's likely Drew will slide in at shortstop with rookie Xander Bogaerts moving over the the hot corner.
