PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is joining a campaign to get former Phillies slugger Dick Allen elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
He's expected to announce his support for the grassroots effort at a City Hall event Wednesday.
They're pushing to get the 72-year-old on the ballot for the Golden Era Veterans Committee of players, executives and writers who evaluate players retired at least 21 years.
Allen played 15 seasons, including eight in Philadelphia.
The Wampum, Pa. native compiled a .292 batting average, .534 slugging percentage, 351 home runs and 1,119 runs batted in.
He appeared in seven all-star games, was the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year and 1972 American League Most Valuable Player, and led the league in slugging three times, on-base percentage twice and homers twice.
