A disastrous season for Padres second baseman Jedd Gyorko took yet another turn for the worse on Friday, when he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis.
Gyorko has been arguably the worst everyday hitter in baseball this year. He’s batting .162—tied for the worst in the majors—with a .482 OPS—easily the worst in the majors. His WAR is minus-1.1 by FanGraphs’ calculation and minus-1.5 by Baseball-Reference’s formula. Either way, the number is worst in the majors.
You get the idea.
And this comes on the heels of the six-year, $35 million contract extension he signed this spring. Gyorko, a second-round pick in the 2010 draft, hit 23 home runs and had a .745 OPS last season, when he finished sixth in the NL rookie of the year voting.
Gyorko told MLB.com that the pain started last weekend.
"It felt like there's stabbing in the heel," Gyorko told MLB.com. "That feeling of walking on needles a little bit. … Every time you move you can feel it. It's one of the worst pains I've felt in my life."
