Cubs fans know the story of '84 too well: Chicago won the first two games of the LCS at Wrigley Field. The series was best-of-five back then, so the Cubs needed just ... one ... win in San Diego to get to the World Series.
Well ...
They lost Game 3 handily. Then the Padres' Steve Garvey hit a walkoff homer in Game 4. And in Game 5 ... Leon Durham happened.
Thirty years later, still no World Series for the Cubbies — and no World Series triumphs for the Padres, either. They lost in five to the Tigers in '84 and were swept by the Yankees in 1998.
UPDATE: Karma alert: Cubs win! Cubs win! Cubs win! By a 5-1 count.
