Ozzie Guillen has been out of baseball since being fired as Marlins manager two years ago.

The long-time White Sox player and skipper would love to return to the game. Specifically, he would love to be a coach under Joe Maddon — if Maddon ends up managing the Cubs, as is rumored.

“This is one guy I’d love to coach for,” Guillen told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He’s a very good baseball man. And he’s not a guy who’s going to be looking behind his back thinking I want to take his job.

“I’ve managed before. Economically, I’m pretty good. I just want to be back in the game.”

Maddon resigned as manager of Rays last week after nine seasons. Numerous reports indicate the Cub are interested in hiring Maddon, but the team still has Rick Renteria under contract for two more seasons.

Guillen played for the White Sox for 13 seasons and managed them for eight. He still lives in Chicago.

He said he wouldn't mind being a coach, even after so many years as a manager (including one in Miami):

“I’m not bigger than the game,” he said. “There’s a lot of managers who went back to coaching after they were managers. That doesn’t mean anything. I’m not better than them. Whoever thinks I can help, if they ask me, I don’t mind doing it.

“A lot of people ask me, will you coach again? Yes, I will. No matter for who. I (also) make it clear a lot of times that if I’m going to coach, I prefer to be in Chicago than anywhere else because it’s my hometown.”
