Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has been suspended for five games and fined for throwing his bat on the field in Sunday's game against the Oakland A's, MLB announced Tuesday.
Also, A’s pitcher Fernando Abad has received an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at Machado.
Machado told reporters he will appeal the suspension.
"Obviously (I) don't want to be down for five days," he said. "Need to try and help this team in any way. We have a lot of tough games up on the road. Need to be a part of this team. Been helping this team for a long time, and I don't want to be down for so many days."
He continuned: "Obviously I consulted with everybody (about appealing). My agent, the team, the organization. Going to see where it goes."
The incident happend following a weekend of bad blood between Machado and the A's. Oakland left-hander Fernando Abad threw inside to Machado in the eighth. The bat flew out of Machado's hands and went down the third base line. Both players exchanged words before the benches and bullpens emptied. Machado and Abad were ejected. Crew Chief Larry Vanover said Machado was ejected for throwing the bat and Abad was tossed for throwing at him a second time.
At the time, the O's were trailing 10-0.
After the game, Machado claimed he didn't let go of the bat on purpose. But on Monday, he apologized to the A's, saying his emotions got the best of him.
