Jose Abreu injury update: White Sox phenom dinged after coming off DL image

Jose Abreu came off the disabled list Monday. It looked as though he'd need to go right back on it following a freak accident.

Abreu, the White Sox's slugging rookie first baseman, was hit with an errant throw during batting practice by Dodgers infielder and fellow Cuban Erisbel Arruebarrena.

Abreu checked out OK and is in the White Sox's lineup at first base.

Abreu missed 14 games because of tendinitis in his left ankle. When he left the lineup, he was leading the majors with 15 home runs and ranked second with 42 RBIs. The White Sox were 8-6 in his absence.

Abreu set major league rookie records for homers (10), RBIs (32), extra-base hits (19) and total bases (71) in April and was selected AL Rookie of the Month.

UPDATE: Abreu hit a two-run homer off the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw in his second at-bat Monday.

UPDATE 2: Those were the only runs Kershaw allowed in a 5-2 Dodgers victory.

SIDE NOTE:  Abreu and Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, teammates with Cienfuegos before defecting from Cuba to the United States, are among six Cuban-born players in uniform for this series. The others are Arruebarrena, Alexei Ramirez, Dayan Viciedo and Adrian Nieto.
