The Mariano Rivera-Yankees union won't be ending anytime soon.
With the 872nd pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, the Yankees selected Rivera's 20-year-old son, Mariano Rivera III, a pitcher out of Iona College.
The sophomore notched 12 starts this past season, including five complete games.
He seems to share his father's relentless nature and work ethic.
"Nothing’s going to get in my way,” he told the New York Post. “If I don’t have the talent, then that’s OK. But I know when given the chance, I can make it. It’s just a matter of time. That’s something that one day will become a reality.”
He ended his campaign with the Gaels with a 5.40 ERA in 70 innings pitched.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi spoke to Mariano Rivera recently and asked him for a scouting report on his son.
"Mo wasn't sure if he got drafted what he would do," Girardi told reporters (via The Associated Press) before the Yankees played the Royals in Kansas City on Saturday night. "But I think it's neat he got drafted by the Yankees and we'll see what happens."
The younger Rivera is slated to spend the summer with the Laconia Muskrats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
