They played the first ever game in the old Home Nations championship way back in 1882, and Wales again host England in 2023 in a crunch match between two sides yet to really fire in this year's tournament.

Both coming into this tournament under the leadership of new head coaches, with Warren Gatland returning to the top job in Wales, and England hiring Steve Borthwick, following the respective sackings of Wayne Pivac and Eddie Jones.

However, both coaches tasted defeat in their first Six Nations games of 2023, with Wales being crushed at home by Ireland, and England also suffering a last-gasp defeat to Scotland at Twickenham, losing the Calcutta Cup to the auld enemy for the third straight year.

With the Principality Stadium roof set to be open for this weekend's clash in the Welsh capital, it's all to play for between these two historic rivals...

How did a Wales player strike nearly call England game off?

The WRU has recently undergone a period of upheaval following the removal of long-time chief executive Steve Phillips from his role, following allegations of sexism within the organisation. Interim Nigel Walker's main task this week has been to come to a resolution with the country's international stars who also play their club rugby in Wales, with this week's crunch talks being a long time in the making.

Wales-based internationals are centrally contracted to their regional clubs, with the WRU paying part of the player's earnings alongside the club in a bid to keep top-tier international talent playing in Wales. This was coupled with the 60-cap rule, according to which a player with less than 60 caps could not represent the country if they plied their trade outside of Wales.

Wednesday's talks have appeased the issues somewhat, meaning the game was not called off, and that 60-cap rule has been reduced to a much more reasonable 25. As well as this, the contracts for seasons 2023-24 and beyond, previously offered to be 80% of current wages plus 20% in potential bonuses, have been overhauled, with individual players now able to decide whether they want to sign a fixed or variable deal in the future.

The issues in Welsh Rugby are deep-rooted and are far from solved with this compromise, but the fact that the game is going ahead means a hugely entertaining fixture can be enjoyed by fans in the ground and watching around the world.

Wales vs. England confirmed lineups

Gatland made a raft of changes for Wales' last game against Scotland, and nine more come for this game. The Wales backline is particularly exciting, with the return of free-scoring winger Louis Rees-Zammit, and a debut at outside centre for 20-year-old Cardiff centre Mason Grady – all six feet five and 100 kilos of him.

There are changes aplenty in the pack too. The experience of Alun Wyn Jones and Justin Tipuric was sorely missed against Scotland, and both return to the matchday line-up. The latter is joined in the back row by Taulupe Faletau, who came off the bench at Murrayfield, and Exeter Chief Christ Tshiunza, who keeps his place in the number six jersey.

Wales Starting XV: Leigh Halfpenny, Josh Adams, Mason Grady, Joe Hawkins, Louis Rees-Zammit, Owen Williams, Tomos Williams; Gareth Thomas, Ken Owens, Tomas Francis, Adam Beard, Alun Wyn Jones, Christ Tshiunza, Justin Tipuric, Taulupe Faletau.

Wales Replacements: Bradley Roberts, Rhys Carre, Dillon Lewis, Dafydd Jenkins, Tommy Reffell, Kieran Hardy, Dan Biggar, Nick Tompkins.

England's sole change to the starting XV comes on the left flank, with London Irish winger Ollie Hassell-Collins, given his test debut by Steve Borthwick, replaced by Anthony Watson. Another Exiles youngster, Henry Arundell, came off the bench to good effect against Italy, crossing in the corner for England's fifth try. He keeps his place.

The scrum, line-out and driving maul in particular sent England on course to beat Italy at Twickenham with a massive first half, all three of their tries coming directly from the set-piece. The starting pack is unchanged and features scorers Jack Willis, Ollie Chessum and Jamie George, while Courtney Lawes, making a long-awaited return from concussion issues, will add even further muscle from the bench.

England Starting XV: Freddie Steward, Max Malins, Henry Slade, Ollie Lawrence, Anthony Watson, Owen Farrell, Jack van Poortvliet; Ellis Genge, Jamie George, Kyle Sinckler, Maro Itoje, Ollie Chessum, Lewis Ludlam, Jack Willis, Alex Dombrandt.

England Replacements: Jack Walker, Mako Vunipola, Dan Cole, Courtney Lawes, Ben Curry, Alex Mitchell, Marcus Smith, Henry Arundell.

Wales vs. England odds

It's a close one to call, particularly with two relatively new head coaches in either camp, but England are tipped to win in Cardiff by all of our listed bookmakers. They're odds on at 4/9 and 4/11 respectively with Sky Bet and BetMGM, with Ladbrokes' $1.40 the longest offer.

However, Wales are still at just 2/1 from British bookies Sky Bet to record a home victory, although other bookmakers have them at longer odds.
