India women's hockey tour of Australia: Hockeyroos rally to 3-2 victory image

India were beaten 3-2 by Australia in the second game of the women's hockey tour of Australia. Sangita Kumari (13’) and Gurjit Kaur (17’) were on target for India, while Tatum Stewart (12’, 45’) and Pippa Morgan (38’) netted the goals for Australia.

The Hockeyroos drew first blood when Stewart (12’) converted a penalty corner. India responded quickly and found the equalizer when Kumari (13') netted a field goal, bringing the score level.

A remarkable run from the midfield by Salima Tete resulted in an excellent pass to the unmarked Sharmila Devi, who skillfully directed the ball to the back post for Sangita to successfully beat Australia's goalkeeper, Jocelyn Bartram. The first quarter concluded with both teams tied at 1-1.

India took an early and well-deserved lead at the start of the second quarter with a quick goal, showcasing their high tempo and attacking gameplay. Kaur (17') stepped up and brilliantly converted a penalty corner, sending her shot into the top right corner and giving India the advantage.

Maintaining their momentum and putting relentless pressure on Australia, India continued to dominate the third quarter as well. The hosts struggled to maintain possession as India pressed high.

Despite India's strong performance, Australia managed to level the score when Morgan (38') deflected in a shot by Maddy Fitzpatrick from a penalty corner. Shortly after, Stewart (45') scored from a penalty stroke to put her team in front. At the end of the third quarter, Australia went into the break with a 3-2 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, India created numerous chances in their quest for an equalizer. However, Australia's tight defence thwarted India's efforts, ensuring that the match concluded with a 3-2 victory in favour of the home team.

India will next take on Australia on May 21, 2023, at 14:15 IST in the third match of the tour.
