Australia has established their sporting dominance within the Commonwealth Games by winning the most golds and medals during the 2022 edition in Birmingham.

Seven gold medals on the final day took the green and gold to 67 gold medals, winning 10 more than England (57), who had the home nation advantage at these Games.

Australia also narrowly saluted in the overall medal tally, winning 178 medals to England's 176 during the 19 sports held across 11 days.

Canada was the next best nation, winning 26 golds and 92 medals all up, while India collected 22 first-place medals in a total of 61.

New Zealand rounded out the top five with 20 golds and 49 medals.

It was the same top five as at Commonwealth Games 2018 on the Gold Coast, with Australia enjoying a more comfortable victory on home soil and Canada working their way above India.

It's the 15th time Australia has won most medals at the Games in its history, with England earning that achievement seven times and Canada once.

Who will host Commonwealth Games 2026?

Victoria has been confirmed as the host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the majority of events to take place in regional centres.

The opening ceremony will be held in Melbourne, before athletes and officials move to hubs in Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, and Gippsland.

Shepparton will also host sporting and cultural events, with each location to have its own athletes’ village and event program.

It represents the first time the Commonwealth Games has been awarded to a state or region in its 92-year history, with a specific city typically taking up hosting duties.
