Achanta Sharath Kamal is arguably the greatest table tennis player to have graced the court representing the Indian tri-colour. Sharath Kamal is a veteran table tennis player and will be featured in his fifth Olympic games as he takes charge at the Paris Olympics 2024. 

He has been selected as the flag bearer along with PV Sindhu by the Indian Olympic Committee for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

How old is Sharath Kamal?

Born on July 12, 1982, Sharath Kamal has just recently turned 42 and will be one of the oldest athletes to participate in the Olympics. He has numerous achievements under his belt and has outclassed every other player hailing from the sub-continent. 

Having a knack for TT since his childhood, he made his debut for the Indian team at a very early age of 20 in 2002.

Sharath Kamal’s achievements

In his 22-year-long career, Sharath Kamal has won an astonishing eight Commonwealth Games gold medals. His latest gold came in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham wherein he bagged gold for the Indian men’s team. 

Along with his eight gold medals, the 42-year-old has won three silver and three bronze medals in the Commonwealth Games, taking his tally to a total of 14 medals.  

Apart from Commonwealth success, Sharath Kamal boasts the record of being the only player to have won the Senior National Championships for a total of 10 times. Sharath Kamal has also won two bronze medals at the Asian Games and three bronze medals in the Asian Championships. 

Despite his tremendous record at the National level and in Asia, Sharath Kamal has yet to win a medal at the Olympic Games. He would feature in his fifth and likely his last Olympic Games once he takes centre stage in Paris. 

In 2019, Sharath Kamal was awarded the Padma Shri award which is the fourth highest civilian award in India, and later on in 2022, he was awarded the Khel Ratna Award which is the highest sporting honour of the Indian subcontinent.
