Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem stunned the world in the men’s javelin throw final round at the Paris Olympics 2024. Defending champion, Neeraj Chopra had to settle for a silver medal this time around as the Pakistani athlete broke the Olympic Record with his 92.97m throw to clinch the gold medal in Paris.
The monumental achievement saw Pakistan winning their first ever gold medal at the Olympic Games in 32 years. Arshad initially looked a bit off his rhythm, however, he compensated more than enough for it with his extraordinary power.

Neeraj could only make a single good throw of 89.45m while being disqualified on all his other throws. Despite not being able to defend his gold medal title from the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the world champion did put immense effort, bagging the silver.
Pakistan are now set to finish above India in the Olympics table despite winning a single medal as compared to the five that India have won so far.
Why is Pakistan above India in medals tally at the Paris Olympics?
The medal tally at the Olympics is primarily determined by counting the number of gold medals a nation has won. In the scenario where the two nations have the same amount of gold medals, who will rank higher is determined using the silver medals. If the silver medals are the same as well, the count goes onto the bronze.
So despite India’s four bronze medals and a silver medal win at the Paris Olympics, they will be ranked below Pakistan in the medals tally because of Arshad’s sole gold medal win at the event.
The Indian contingent will have to win a gold medal if they are to overtake Pakistan in the table. Even a single gold will outscore the neighbouring nation by a huge margin, considering the difference in the amount of silver and bronze medal wins.
Rank | Nation | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
53 | Pakistan | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
64 | India | 0 | 1 | 4 | 5 |
