Raiders draft picks 2023: When does Las Vegas pick? Full list of NFL Draft selections image

The 2023 NFL Draft is an important step forward — or backward — for the Raiders.

Las Vegas has had several astoundingly bad picks in recent years, wasting first-round selections in 2019, 2020 and 2021 with the likes of defensive end Clelin Ferrell, receiver Henry Ruggs III and offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood, respectively — none of whom is still with the team. The Raiders got a solid offensive lineman in Dylan Parham last year with the 90th overall pick of the draft, but more is needed to help Josh McDaniels build off a 6-11 campaign.

Luckily for Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler, the team has 12 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, including four in the top 100, to add quality players and depth pieces to a team that needs to address several positions this offseason. And Las Vegas likely won't have to use its top picks to shore up that most important position: quarterback.

Instead, the Raiders added former 49ers signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo, signing him to a three-year, $72.75 million deal in free agency. That addresses what was a glaring need after the team moved on from Derek Carr, and frees it up to make important additions elsewhere.

Raiders NFL Draft needs

  • Cornerback: The Raiders will be out of contention for any of the top three quarterbacks and several of the top defensive players if they remain at No. 7 — but in great position to draft Oregon's Christian Gonzalez, considered the best cornerback in the draft. He has the speed, fluidity and ball-hawking skills in a 6-1, 200-pound frame to be a Day 1 starter. That's good news for Las Vegas, which last year ranked 29th in passing defense (242.9 yards per game) and tied for last in interceptions (six)
  • Interior defensive line: Las Vegas last season fielded a defense that ranked 19th in the NFL by surrendering 122.8 yards per game on the ground, including a four-game stretch to end the season in which they surrendered 162.5 rushing yards per game. The Raiders have Bilal Nichols and re-signed Jerry Tillery, but desperately need quality depth at the position. Would Las Vegas consider taking Georgia's Jalen Carter if he fell to them? He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing for his involvement in the January deaths of a teammate and recruiting staffer at Georgia. The Raiders are still recovering after Ruggs killed a woman and her dog after crashing into their car while driving drunk.
  • Offensive line: Las Vegas could continue addressing multiple needs on defense, including linebacker and EDGE rusher, but may need to find some additional protection for Garoppolo. Kolton Miller has the left tackle position locked down, and it looks as if Parham and Andre Johnson have the right guard and center positions in order as well. The other side of the line is a different story, with the right tackle position in particular up for grabs in a projected three-man competition of Brandon Parker, Jermaine Eluemunor and Thayer Munford Jr. Las Vegas may consider using its top pick with one of Northwestern's Peter Skoronski or Ohio State's Paris Johnson Jr., or otherwise address that need later in the draft.
