Day 1 of the men's basketball at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is in the books.

Italy 92, Germany 82

Italy got their Olympic tournament off to a winning start with a 10-point victory over Germany, led by 20 points from Simone Fontecchio.

The Italians rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to storm home in the second half, closing the final period on a 12-0 run, with Nico Melli scoring seven of his 13 points in the game-sealing run. 

Mo Wagner put Germany in front 82-80 with 4:46 remaining, but that was their final score of the game as they missed their final eight shot attempts.

Danilo Gallinari and Stefano Tonut added 18 points apiece, while Golden State Warriors rookie Nico Mannion chipped in 10 points.  

What's next?

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday in Group B as Italy takes on Australia and Germany faces Nigeria.

Czech Republic 84, Iran 78

The Czech Republic led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter before Iran rallied to get within four points, 80-76, with a minute remaining. 

Blake Schilb, who scored 14 points on the night, responded to Iran's late run with two clutch buckets on the Czech's next two possessions to give them some breathing room.

The Czechs missed nine of their first 10 shots in the fourth before Iran's Behnam Yakhchalidehkordi connected on a four-point play, a layup and another three to nearly pull off the upset. He finished with a game-high 23 points, while former NBA big man Hamed Haddadi added 15 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late.

Czech big man Patrik Auda led his team with 16 points off the bench.

What's next?

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday in Group A, with Iran taking on Team USA and the Czech Republic facing France.

Australia 84, Nigeria 67

#Mills

It was a scrappy game between Australia and Nigeria as both teams combined for 46 turnovers.

Australia held a 58-52 lead at the end of the third quarter before they seized control of the contest in the final frame, outscoring Nigeria 26-13 to seal the win.

Patty Mills led the Aussies with 25 points on 7-for-16 shooting from the field and 5-for-8 from beyond the arc, adding six assists, four rebounds and four steals and was a whopping plus-25.

Joe Ingles added 11 points while Dante Exum chipped in 11 points and five rebounds, in addition to giving the Boomers a jolt on the defensive end as he and Matisse Thybulle put their length and athleticism to good use, stifling Nigeria's offence.

Nigeria finished with three players in double figures, led by 12 points from Obi Emegano, followed by Josh Okogie (11) Jordan Nwora (10).

What's next?

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday in Group B as Australia takes on Italy and Nigeria faces Germany. 

France 83, United States 76

Lillard

France hands Team USA their first Olympic loss since 2004, bringing an end to a 24-game win streak.

Evan Fournier led the way for France with a game-high 28 points. Rudy Gobert added 14 points and nine rebounds while Nando de Colo scored 13 points.

Team USA's leading scorer was Jrue Holiday, who finished with 18 points, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter. Kevin Durant was limited to 20 minutes because of foul trouble and Damian Lillard finished with more turnovers (4) than assists (3).

Team USA shot 15-for-37 (40.5 percent) from 2-point range and 10-for-32 (31.3 percent) from 3-point range in the loss.

What's next?

Team USA will face Iran on Wednesday while France takes on the Czech Republic.
