The NBA's plan to begin the 2021 season on Dec.22 has cleared a significant hurdle, with the NBPA player representatives voting to approve the proposed 72-game season starting on that date.
The vote was conducted by player reps, though, it is just one of many steps that will need to be navigated, including a safe plan for play during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the financial implications for revenue in what will be a shortened season.
A statement was released by the NBPA including the following:
"The Board of Player Representatives of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) has tentatively approved a start date of December 22, 2020 for the 2020-2021 NBA season and a 72-game schedule. Additional details remain to be negotiated and the NBPA is confident that the parties will reach agreement on these remaining issues relevant to the upcoming season.”

The timeline between now and Dec.22 is tight, with the Nov.18 draft, free agency and training camp to come between now and then.
