Looking to become a three-division champion following a brief retirement, Henry Cejudo wants to end Aljamain Sterling’s run as the current bantamweight king of the UFC. Can “Triple C” get the job done at UFC 288 on May 6?
UFC 288 will be inside the Prudential Center in New Jersey, airing on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S.
Sterling joined the UFC in 2014 and is 14-3 with the promotion. Beating Petr Yan via DQ in 2021 to win the UFC bantamweight title, he beat Yan in a rematch to secure his status as champion. Funk Master’s last fight was a TKO win against an injured T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 280 in October.
After losing to Demetrious Johnson for the UFC flyweight title in 2016, Cejudo won the rematch in 2018. In 2019, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist won the UFC bantamweight title, earning "champ-champ" status. After beating Dominick Cruz in May 2020, Cejudo retired from MMA to focus on his family.

Keeping in shape during this time, Cejudo shouldn’t be an easy task for Sterling. However, the champion believes he has the ultimate game plan against Cejudo.
"I feel I stop him in the second round, that's the plan with how I'm training," Sterling told Inside Fighting via MMA News. "I think he's going to be tough to get out of there in the first round. I think it'll be a feeling-out process, maybe trying to gas him out a little bit, and put him on the back foot. If I can get him down that'll be ideal. Once I get the takedown secured, I just pound him, or he gives up his neck for the submission."
