Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo hit the IL Thursday with a suspected concussion from a two-month-old injury, per Yankees manager Aaron Boone.
The injury is officially being called post-concussion syndrome stemming from a May 28 collision with Fernando Tatis Jr., and Rizzo will be evaluated weekly to determine his status. According to Boone, Rizzo was "complaining a little bit the last few days of some fogginess."
As a result, the team ran tests that found "cognitive impairment," which led to Rizzo being shelved for the time being.
Boone added Rizzo "went through MLB -- like all the testing -- immediately (after the Tatis collision) and then the days after to rule that stuff out past that."

Rizzo's loss is another blow for the Yankees, who came into Thursday 56-52, 10 games back of the AL East-leading Orioles.
What is Anthony Rizzo's injury?
Rizzo is battling a suspected concussion, more specifically post-concussion syndrome, which presents symptoms such as the fogginess Boone referred to.
Rizzo seemingly suffered the injury more than two months ago against the Padres when the Yankees successfully back-picked Tatis after a strikeout. Tatis came in standing up and Rizzo wobbled off the bag after tagging the Padres right fielder out.
Rizzo cleared concussion protocols after the game, but he was taken out when the injury was suffered in the sixth inning and missed the next three games.
When will Anthony Rizzo be back?
With his stint on the IL, Rizzo won't be eligible to return until mid-to-late August.
As the Yankees fall further into disrepair, however, they may be conservative with Rizzo, who they are officially calling week-to-week. If they fall further out of the standings before he can return, the front office could elect to keep Rizzo out until they're certain he's healthy.
Rizzo playing with a "likely concussion" is massively concerning for the Yankees, particularly with the trade deadline having passed. Jake Bauers was in the lineup for the Yankees at first Thursday.

Anthony Rizzo stats pre/post May 28
Correlation doesn't equal causation, particularly in a sport with the variance of baseball.
Rizzo's stats pre and post May 28, however, are striking. His struggles this year are well-documented -- Rizzo's July 23 home run was his first since May 20. The recently revealed diagnosis could add some clarity to his struggles.
Period | Avg. | OBP | SLG% | OPS | HRs | Ks | BBs |
March 30 - May 28 (52 games) | .304 | .376 | .505 | .880 | 11 | 53 | 18 |
June 2 - Aug. 1 (45 games) | .172 | .271 | .225 | .496 | 1 | 44 | 17 |
Rizzo is on the first year of a two-year, $40 million deal with a club option for 2025. As one of the Yankees' few signees, even as an internal one, he's become a lightning rod for criticism in the midst of a brutal Yankees season. This could shed some light on where his struggles stem from.
Discontent is already high in New York, and allowing a player to play injured for two months isn't going to help things. Now, the focus will be on getting Rizzo healthy as the Yankees -- whether they admit it or not -- start to look ahead to next season.
