Yankees slugger Aaron Judge left Thursday's game against the Rangers with right hip discomfort.

And although the Bombers' captain doesn't believe the injury is too serious, he could be looking at a short spell on the sideline.

Judge told reporters that he felt a little tension on the right side of his body after sliding awkwardly into third base on a steal attempt when New York faced Minnesota on Wednesday. He returned to the game but appeared to be favoring his right hand as he made his way to the dugout.

The reigning American League MVP returned for Thursday's game, striking out twice. In the top of the fourth inning, he appeared to tweak something while at the plate. He would leave the game shortly thereafter.

Aaron Judge injury update

The Yankees said Saturday that an MRI exam revealed a mild hip strain. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters pregame (per MLB.com) that it's not yet certain that Judge will be placed on the injured list.

"We’re going to wait to see (Saturday) and (Sunday), and see how we’re doing, to see if this is something that we want to take a 10-day [injured list stint] or if he is ready to play by Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday; we’ll keep that in play,” Boone said, per MLB.com. Boone said Judge has "shown a lot of improvements here over the last two days."

Judge told reporters after Friday's game what compelled him to step off the diamond so early.

"Just a little grab in the hip area," he said. "After that head-first dive the other night, kind of the whole right side's been locked up. It wasn't until the second-to-last swing that at-bat I kind of felt something grab and they kind of thought it would be best just to kind of shut it down and see how we feel after a couple days."

When asked whether he was planning on sitting out the remainder of the four-game set vs. Texas, Judge was reticent.

"I don't have the answer to that," he said. "We'll take it day to day and see how things feel."

Per The Athletic's Brendan Kuty, Judge underwent an MRI on his hip.

Judge is hitting .261/.352/.511 with six homers and 14 RBIs on the season. Despite his strong performance, the Yanks find themselves fourth the AL East entering Friday, six games back of the red-hot Rays.
