LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $85 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

James had a player option in his contract for the 2021-22 season, opening the door for him to be an unrestricted free agent following the 2020-21 season.

James is now under contract with the Lakers through 2023. As Charania noted, James' oldest son, Bronny James, is set to graduate from high school in 2023 and could have the option of entering the NBA Draft if the NBA and NBPA change the "high school-to-pro rule."

James is entering his third season with the Lakers. In his second season, he averaged 25.3 points, 10.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game and finished second in MVP voting behind Giannis Antetokounmpo. He went on to average 27.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game in the playoffs, leading the Lakers to their first championship in a decade.
