Golden State Warriors def. Atlanta Hawks, 110-103
With Draymond Green serving a one-game suspension handed down by head coach Steve Kerr following his altercation with Kevin Durant in the fallout from Golden State's loss to the Clippers, the Warriors held off the Atlanta Hawks for a seven-point win at home.
The Warriors got off to a slow start, scoring just 20 points in the first quarter, easily their fewest in any opening quarter this season. They shot just 6-21 in the first quarter with Durant scoring 11 of the team's 20 points. Golden State trailed by three points at the half before outscoring the Hawks 33-24 in the third quarter.
The Warriors led by as many as 15 points midway through the fourth quarter but could not put the Hawks away as they cut it to five with just under two minutes left.
Durant finished with 29 points to lead the defending champions with Klay Thompson pumping in 24.
The anticipated first matchup between Hawks rookie Trae Young and Curry will have to wait as Curry did not play as he recovers from a groin strain. Young, who grew up patterning his game after Curry, entered the matchup averaging 18.5 points per game, but could not get it going in this one. He finished with four points on 2-12 shooting including an 0-5 performance from beyond the arc. He did finish with a game-high nine assists.
Record & Standing
The Warriors remain atop the Western Conference at 12-3, one game ahead of the Portland Trail Blazers who are 10-3 and riding a four-game win streak, the longest active win streak in the NBA. The Denver Nuggets lost their fourth straight game and fell to 9-5, 2.5 games behind the Warriors.
