Copa America Estados Unidos 2024 Conmebol
(@CONMEBOL)

The 2024 Copa America is fast approaching and the tournament is better than ever in an expanded format.

Just like in 2016, the United States will host the latest edition of South America's most renowned tournament, with Lionel Messi’s Argentina entering this summer's tournament as the defending champion.

Copa is the oldest active international football tournament, having started in 1916, with Uruguay winning the first edition.

Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay have historically dominated the competition, but with the USMNT added to the mix alongside the other five strong CONCACAF sides in Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, and Jamaica, in 2024 there's surely more intrigue than in previous editions.

For those eagerly eyeing this year's event, The Sporting News brings an early assessment of each team's odds of lifting the Copa America 2024 trophy in USA.

Who will win Copa America 2024? Brazil, Argentina among the favourites

There's really just one place to start. The last edition of this competition in Brazil three years ago finally handed Lionel Messi his first international title, and he has been on fire in the international circuit since, adding the 2022 World Cup and Finalissima to his esteemed collection.

Needless to say, the world’s No. 1-ranked team, and current leaders in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying table, Argentina, are the favorites to defend their crown, as per Dafabet.

La Albiceleste does have to navigate through arguably the most competitive group, with Chile, Peru and Canada all fully believing that they can advance to the next round.

As for fierce rivals Brazil, this tournament represents a chance to reclaim their status as the kings of the continent, having had a tough time of things of late, including a premature World Cup exit in 2022 and losing three straight games in 2026 World Cup qualification.

Although the Selecao are not quite at the level of past major tournaments — for one, they will be without star forward Neymar due to injury — they will still be one of the leading contenders for glory, as they head to the States as the second favourites.

Uruguay boast the record for the joint-most Copa America titles in history—they have won 15 alongside Argentina.

Currently ranked 15 in the April FIFA ranking and boasting top-level talent in Darwin Nunez, Federico Valverde, and Ronald Araujo, they have been placed as the third favourites by the bookies to win the Copa America title again for the first time since 2011.

The USA will undoubtedly be one of the dark horses to win Copa America on the heels of back-to-back CONCACAF Nations League trophy wins.

The other one of CONCACAFs perennial powerhouses, Mexico, should also be considered true challengers, boasting a reputation for being a constant pest on the international stage.

Chile will have fond memories of playing in the United States, having won the second of their back-to-back Copa America titles in the USA, while Peru also reached the final as recently as 2019.

With the likes of Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, and Tajon Buchanan on their roster, nobody can write off tournament debutants Canada, though finishing bottom of their group at the recent World Cup despite spirited performances doesn't bode well for their odds.
