The first major domestic final of the 2022/23 English season pits Manchester United up against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Eddie Howe and Erik ten Hag are looking to secure a first trophy at their respective clubs after playing a huge part of impressive runs to the final.

Newcastle edged past Southampton in the semifinals with a 3-1 aggregate scoreline, as United eased out Nottingham Forest in their last-four tie to set up an all-Premier League meeting at Wembley.

Ten Hag is pushing hard to secure a title in his first season at Old Trafford whilst Howe's Magpies are looking to end decades of trophyless campaigns on Tyneside.

How did Man United and Newcastle reach the 2023 Carabao Cup final?

Newcastle have endured the tougher route to the final, with Howe's charges beating a Premier League team at every stage from their Third Round entrance.

The Red Devils have been split between top flight, Championship and League One opponents in their four Carabao Cup outings this season.

Howe's Magpies have relied on tight victories to power them to Wembley while United put four goals past Aston Villa and Forest.

Man United, Newcastle in Carabao Cup finals

Newcastle have never won the Carabao (EFL) Cup with just one previous final appearance in their history coming in a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in 1976.

In stark contrast, 2023 is United's 10th EFL Cup final, with old foes Liverpool (13) the only side to feature in more.

However, those finals have produced a mixed bag of results for the Red Devils, with four defeats (1983, 1991, 1994 and 2003) alongside five wins (in 1992, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2017).

The 2017 final victory against Southampton is United's last major domestic trophy with ten Hag describing the gap in silverware as 'too long'.

Man United vs Newcastle head-to-head

United have enjoyed a strong historical record over Newcastle with 90 wins in all competitions alongside 43 losses and 41 draws.

The two teams have enjoyed some fantastic battles during the Premier League era with Newcastle's 5-0 win at Old Trafford in 1996 going down as one of their most famous results.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson constantly got the better of the Magpies, and in particular, his old sparring partner, Kevin Keegan.

Philippe Albert's famous chip was synonymous with the fixture for over a decade before Wayne Rooney's unbelievable goal in their 2005 meeting at Old Trafford.
