A rejuvenated Sevilla take on Roma in the final of the UEFA Europa League at Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary.

This is Sevilla's seventh Europa League final, winning in each of the previous six instances (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020). They are also the most successful club in the competition.

Meanwhile, José Mourinho's Roma will be hoping to win their first UEFA Europa League title and book a place in next year's UEFA Champions League, having won the UEFA Europa Conference League in the 2021-22 season.

'The Special One' is also the only manager to have all three European club competitions - the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan, Europa League with Manchester United, and Conference League with Roma.

The Giallorossi defeated RB Salzburg, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord, and Bayer Leverkusen - managed by Xabi Alonso, who played under Mourinho at Real Madrid - en route to the final. Meanwhile, Sevilla eliminated PSV, Fenerbahçe, Manchester United, and Juventus to defy the odds. The appointment of José Luis Mendilibar has revived the Sevilla ship and turned around the fortunes in a dramatic fashion.

Sevilla vs Roma match facts

  • Date: Thursday, June 1
  • Kickoff Time: 12:30 AM IST
  • Location: Puskás Aréna (Budapest, Hungary)

  • Last meeting: Sevilla 2-0 Roma (August 6, 2020 | Europa League Round of 16)

The lone prior competitive encounter between Sevilla and Roma happened in the 2019–20 UEFA Europa League Round of 16. The Covid-19 pandemic caused the season to be postponed, so this match was played as a one-legged match in a neutral location (the MSV-Arena in Duisburg).

Sergio Reguilón and Youssef En-Nesyri scored in the first half to give Sevilla the victory and set up a quarterfinal matchup with Wolves of the Premier League.

Sevilla vs Roma prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Sevilla (+170)
  • Score prediction: Sevilla 1-0 Roma

Both sides have almost equal odds of leaving Budapest with the trophy because the oddsmakers have no idea who will win this game. It makes sense given that the two teams have radically different stylistic trajectories and have been a challenge to assess due to inconsistent league and European play this season.

With Sevilla's history in the Europa League and Mourinho's extensive success in European football, there is an even greater degree of narrative uncertainty between the two teams.

However, history suggests that Sevilla might just edge out Roma in this monumental clash.

Although this is Mendilibar's first European final, the good news for him is that Spanish managers have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League 12 times in total, more than any other nation's managers, and they have also won six of the last 10 finals.

A major European competition's final will have a Spanish team taking on an Italian team for the 14th time overall, with the Spanish team winning on nine of the previous 13 occasions, including the last three.
