After licking their wounds from the 4-0 demolition at the hands of Japan, FIFA's sixth-ranked team Spain must turn the Women's World Cup page to the knockout stage and a Round of 16 matchup against Switzerland.

Spain looked one of the most dominant teams in the field through the first two group games, but they were served a dose of reality in the loss to Japan, ultimately finishing second in Group C. Still, they remain one of the most loaded teams in the tournament, with raw talent at every area of the pitch.

Switzerland, meanwhile, topped a soft Group A on the back of a 2-0 win over Philippines plus a pair of scoreless draws against Norway and New Zealand.

As one of just three teams in the 2023 field not to concede a single goal through the group stage, Switzerland face by far their toughest test, with the winner set to meet the quarterfinal qualifier from Netherlands vs. South Africa.

Switzerland vs Spain prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Spain (-275)
  • Score prediction: Switzerland 1-2 Spain

Switzerland's defensive output in the group stage was impressive, but it came against weaker opposition. Spain, angered by their defeat to Japan, will be on a war path to show they are capable of more.

It's hard to trust Spain as a true title contender given their litany of disappointing results in big spots over the past two years, but they should have the firepower to get by Switzerland here, a team that conceded eight goals to Portugal, Sweden, and the Netherlands in their Euro 2022 group stage just a year ago.

    Switzerland vs Spain: best bet

    • Pick: Spain -1.5 goal handicap
    • Odds: +105 (BetMGM)

It's hard to know whether this game will end up over or under the 2.5 goal total, but Spain should have enough in this to get by Switzerland comfortably.

Spain produced nine shots per game in the group stage, including 10 against Japan in a shutout defeat. While the finishing there was missing, they can pour on the pressure in droves.

Swiss goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann only had to make eight saves through the group stage, but she'll be peppered here against a swarming Spanish attack. It's hard to see the Swiss defense holding up, instead looking more like... okay, fine, the cheese pun is just too easy.

    Switzerland vs Spain prop bet

The main target up front for Spain has been as prolific as they come at this World Cup. She has two goals on 14 shots thus far (good for third in the tournament), and still could have had many more, missing a penalty in the opener against Costa Rica and spurning a few other opportunities.

In the 4-0 defeat to Japan, Hermoso still had 87 touches through the 90 minutes, showing how heavily involved in the attack she is. She can score in all manner of ways, including through a proficiency in the air. Sometimes, the obvious play is the right play.
