With Group A at the 2023 Women's World Cup still entirely undecided, Switzerland and New Zealand meet to anoint a knockout stage participant.

Switzerland, leading the group with four points, need just a draw to confirm a place in the knockout standings, while New Zealand know they likely need to win to advance. The co-hosts could theoretically advance with a draw, but it would require Norway and the Philippines to draw as well, and with both those teams needing a win to sniff the knockout stage, a draw between two desperate sides seems unlikely.

Still, three points would be extremely valuable for the Swiss, as it would see them confirmed as group winners, which would be a massive accomplishment, as it would see them almost certainly avoid a Round of 16 matchup with Spain, unless the Europeans suffer a shock defeat to Japan on the final day.

Given the enormous stakes, both teams should go for the win, especially late once they've potentially managed to get through the early stages without suffering an early knockout blow.

Switzerland vs New Zealand prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Switzerland (+110)
  • Score prediction: Switzerland 1-0 New Zealand

Goals are heavily expected to be at a significant premium in this group finale, given that both teams have been defensive-minded throughout the early stages of this tournament thus far, plus the tense nature of the match with so much on the line.

Switzerland are the favourites, but the co-hosts, after their opening round upset of Norway, are given a real chance to secure a result, with the home fans behind them.

Switzerland vs New Zealand best bet

    • Pick: New Zealand under 0.5 goals
    • Odds: +120 (BetMGM)

New Zealand may have the home fans behind them, and it's clearly given them encouragement on the whole, but it has not helped them in front of goal.

Excluding Hannah Wilkinson's winner against Norway in the opener, the Football Ferns have collected 27 shots, putting just five on target and failing to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, they will be going up against a Switzerland side that held the Philippines to just three shots and kept a clean sheet against misfiring Norway, who were without Ada Hegerberg the whole way and had Caroline Graham Hansen only off the bench.

Switzerland only need a draw to advance, so they'll play this one very safe. It will be suffocating for New Zealand on the ball, and chances will be at a premium.
