Legendary Dutch manager Louis van Gaal's tournament swansong, the absence of Sadio Mane and the peril either side could face with defeat will be among the sub-plots when Senegal and the Netherlands meet in their Group A opener at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With the group's other two teams, Qatar and Ecuador, having squared off 24 hours earlier in the tournament curtain-raiser, they could be buoyed by a setback for either of the so-called 'bigger' teams in the pool, if there is a clear winner in Group A's second matchup.

Oranje are unbeaten since Van Gaal took charge for a third spell in August 2021, while Senegal arrive as the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions.

Here's how you can watch all the action in the major global territories.

Senegal vs. Netherlands lineups

The absence of Mane, who came second to Karim Benzema in the Ballon d'Or in October 2022, will further irritate critics who question why the World Cup is taking place in the middle of domestic seasons.

Mane suffered a tibia injury while playing for Bayern Munich on November 8 but had travelled to Qatar in the hope of being ready to take part at some point during the finals, only for his enforced exit from the squad to be announced four days before Senegal's first game.

Centre-back Pape Abou Cisse — a member of the squad who won AFCON — has also been troubled by a hip issue that kept him out of four matches in October for Greek side Olympiacos.

Senegal probable (4-5-1, right to left): 1. E Mendy (GK) – 11. F Mendy, 12. Cisse, 3. Koulibaly, 22. Ballo-Toure – 15. Diatta, 16. Ciss, 17. PM. Sarr, 6. N Mendy, 5. I Gueye – 9. Dia

Forward Memphis Depay was thought to have returned to full training with the Netherlands following a hamstring injury that he has struggled with during the first half of the season with Barcelona. However, manager Louis van Gaal stated in his pre-match press conference on Sunday that Depay would miss the match.

Wingback Denzel Dumfries says he has recovered from a knee injury he suffered while playing for Inter Milan in their last Serie A game before the finals, when midfielder Marten de Roon was unavailable for Inter's opponents, Atalanta, because of a muscular issue.

Netherlands probable (3-4-1-2, right to left): 1. Pasveer (GK) – 2. Timber, 4. Van Dijk, 5. Ake – 22. Dumfries, 11. Berghuis, 21. F. De Jong, 17. Blind – 8. Gakpo – 7. Bergwijn, 18. Janssen

Senegal vs. Netherlands odds, prediction

On a 15-match unbeaten run, including five wins from their last six, the Netherlands are odds-on to prevail in their opener.

There are longer odds on the ball hitting the net at least twice and both teams to score, which could catch the eye. These sides have the capacity to entertain and have tended to share goals throughout their teams, even without taking Mane into account.

  • Pick: Virgil van Dijk first goalscorer (18/1)
  • Prediction: 2-1
