Conceding goals and failing to score chances is not exactly a recipe that will get Real Madrid supporters excited about the 2023/24 season.

Real Madrid allowed two easy goals in the first half, and Italian side Juventus ran out with a 3-1 win over the Spanish giants in a preseason friendly played in Orlando. That followed a 3-0 loss to rivals Barcelona on Saturday night.

Juventus scored in the opening minute, with Moise Keane free to tap home a rebound in the six-yard box after a Weston McKennie shot hit the post. McKennie was once again involved on the second, finding Tim Weah in the box. And then Dusan Vlahovic got a tap-in at the far post on the final play of the game deep in stoppage time.

The first goal looked easy, and then Juve picked Real apart for the other two, as Carlo Ancelotti's side struggled to manage without Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield and with both their fullbacks pushing high into the attack for the entire match.

In the attack, Real Madrid eventually pulled a goal back before halftime thanks to Vinicius Jr., who went on one of his patented runs in the open field. But a solid performance by Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and two misses by Real Madrid forward Joselu kept Real Madrid from more goals as they were frustrated in attack for a second straight match.

The Madridistas will also feel shortchanged by a decision from the officials at the end of regulation. Ismail Elfath called a foul on a Juventus player which occurred in the left corner of the Juve box, but the free-kick was instead placed outside the box. That should've resulted in a Real Madrid penalty kick with a chance at an equaliser, but with no VAR technology available at Camping World Stadium, the decision on the field could not be reversed.

Real Madrid end their USA tour in disappointing fashion given the 3-0 loss to rivals Barcelona a few days prior. The preseason had started so well against AC Milan (3-2 win) and Manchester United (2-0 win).

Juventus, who are facing a season of transition without European competition, close out on a high. After a match against Barcelona was scratched due to a virus that struck the Spanish side, they drew AC Milan 2-2 and ended with a prestigious win against a Real Madrid team that should contend for the La Liga title in Spain.

This was the last scheduled friendly for both clubs, as Real Madrid start their La Liga season on Aug. 12 at Athletic Club with Juventus in action a week later in Serie A at Udinese (Aug. 20).

Joselu, Vinicius cannot replace Karim Benzema

One of the themes of Real Madrid's 2023/24 season will be how they make up for the playmaking ability, the exquisite class, and above all the goals that Karim Benzema took with him to Saudi Arabia during the summer.

Joselu has shown well off the bench in low-pressure situations as a super-sub. But in the start against Juventus, he did not look confident in tandem with Vinicius Jr., and missed two big chances, though neither was easy. But that's not what the fanbase will claim.

As for Vinicius Jr, he may have scored the goal, but he was not able to get others involved in the attack. By contrast, last season he and Benzema had a clear chemistry, often finding each other for one-touch combinations that sliced open opposing defenses. Vinicius has to quickly find that relationship with Rodrygo and/or Joselu or it could be a long season watching him try to do it all by himself.

Does Carlo Ancelotti know his Real Madrid starting 11?

Preseason is made for mixing and matching, and we saw another combination of Real Madrid players against Juventus. You'd figure that manager Carlo Ancelotti has seen what he's needed to see by now to determine his best starting lineup.

Based on what has been witnessed across the four preseason matches, it would seem that the most effective Real Madrid starting XI looks like this:

(4-3-3, right to left): Thibaut Courtois (GK) — Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, Fran Garcia — Fede Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga — Jude Bellingham — Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo

That selection leaves veterans Luka Modric (37 years old) and Toni Kroos (33 years old) on the bench, and Eder Militao battling for a centre-back spot with Antonio Rudiger. Joselu will likely be a sub in most matches, and perhaps a starter against La Liga's relegation strugglers.

It's still not a sure thing that Ancelotti's tactical system featuring Vinicius and Rodrygo at forward with Jude Bellingham behind them is a productive set-up. Having Bellingham in central midfield could be preferred with a front three of Vinicius-Rodrygo-Valverde, which we saw for stretches in 2022/23, as a more impactful combination.

The reality is that Bellingham was not exactly pulling the strings of the attack like a No. 10 against Barcelona and Juventus. So the days of the Bellingham attacking midfield experiment could be numbered.

Juventus in transition and more changes could be coming

As for Juventus, their starting lineup has potential to create issues for opponents, but manager Max Allegri will need to use the 2023/24 season to find some reliable depth in the younger players currently on the team.

There's chatter about a potential Chelsea swap, with Dusan Vlahovic and Romelu Lukaku switching sides, and there's still time for that to be worked out. But Juventus are desperate for a dependable centre-forward entering the new season, whether Vlahovic stays or goes.

Federico Chiesa, Filip Kostic, and Matias Soule should create plenty of chances around the box, and Moise Kean and Arkadiusz Milik will put in honest shifts and make hard runs, but a regular box finisher is needed.

Especially without European competition, this Juventus team is capable of a top-four finish. But Milan, Napoli, and Inter have better squads and should finish higher in the Italian Serie A table. That leaves Roma, Juventus, Atalanta, and Lazio to battle it out for the fourth Champions League berth, and there's not one team from that foursome who's currently heads-and-shoulders above the others.

Real Madrid vs Juventus live updates, highlights, commentary

Final: Real Madrid 1-3 Juventus

95th minute: Goal Juventus! What a transition from the Italian club. The ball ends up on the right and Soule delivers a perfectly threaded cross that finds Dusan Vlahovic at the far post.

90th minute: Five minutes of stoppage time. Real Madrid are pushing for an equaliser.

90th minute: Penalty Real Madrid? The referee calls a foul against midfielder Enzo Barrenechea for his challenge on Rodrygo. But the referee does not see that the foul was inside the box and gives Real Madrid the free-kick outside the box.

Nothing comes of the free-kick.

VAR would have helped Ismail Elfath there, but it's not available at the Camping World Stadium.

86th minute: Chance Juventus. It's the only look of the second half for the Italian side. It's Gatti who takes a crack, but Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is ready and parries it for a corner. Nothing comes of it.

83rd minute: SUB Real Madrid. The second half has been a farce with all the stoppages. Nico Paz is on for Toni Kroos. Jude Bellingham is going the full 90.

78th minute: SUBS. Why not? More subs. Dusan Vlahovic is on for Juventus. Brahim and Odriozola are also on the field for Vini and Fran Garcia. Odriozola plays right-back and Carvajal moves over to left-back.

77th minute: Hydration break.

73rd minute: SUBS Juventus. The Italian side with another installment of three young players as Kostic, Danilo, and Locatelli are out.

67th minute: SUBS Juventus. Two more for the Bianconeri, one in midfield and another in the back. McKennie and Bremer are off.

64th minute: Chance Real Madrid! And right away Fede Valverde makes his presence felt with a shot from distance that nicks the top of the bar.

63rd minute: SUBS Real Madrid. Six subs for Real Madrid. Three in the back, two in midfield and one at forward. Carvajal has the armband.

59th minute: Chance Real Madrid! Luka Modric put Joselu through, but the Spanish forward just pokes at the ball without much conviction and it goes wide. That was another good chance in a central position.

55th minute: YELLOW card to Federico Gatti, who used a high arm to stop Vinicius breaking toward goal. He fell just outside the top of the box.

That play was triggered after an errant pass by Weston McKennie. Lots of discussions between McKennie and other teammates on either side of halftime. The biggest acquisition for Juventus this summer? It could be McKennie if he can polish his game.

48th minute: Chance Real Madrid! Fran Garcia tries his luck from distance, but it goes wide right. Strong start from the Madridistas.

47th minute: Dive Vinicius! It was a delayed one for the Brazilian after contact from substitute Andrea Cambiaso. No chance it was a penalty.

46th minute: We're underway. Five changes for Juventus. Milik in at forward, Pinsoglio in goal. Cambiaso for Weah at right wingback. Federico Gatti is now in defense and Iling-Junior in midfield.

Halftime: Real Madrid 1-2 Juventus

Halftime: Real Madrid's defending has left something to be desired, and Juventus have been alert and ready to pounce from the opening minute. The Juve attacks have been direct and quick, pushing numbers in the attack. The second goal was a clinical counter.

Similar to the match against Barcelona, Real Madrid had their chances, but between Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, Vinicius trying to do it all himself, and the quality of the other shots taken, Madrid have just one goal to speak for their efforts.

Most concerning to Madrid fans is the fact that Joselu has been invisible. He's the centre-forward, but they're not finding him and he's not making himself an easy target to find. He had the one chance, but it was harder than it looked.

42nd min.: Chances Real Madrid! It's a double chance. Juve goalkeeper Szczesny first parries a beautiful shot by Nacho at the top of the box, and then a Toni Kroos shot is blocked. Madrid have their tails up to end the half. They're pushing hard for an equaliser.

38th min.: Goal Real Madrid! And it's Vinicius! Toni Kroos with the beautiful through ball around the defender and Vinicius runs onto it and takes it all the way. Great play. Bremer was chasing him, but then the defender gave up on that play and left it to Szczesny, who couldn't stop it.

37th min.: Chance Real Madrid! Vinicius comes across the field to get the ball in the right side of the box and he tries the audacious chip to the far post, but misses just high. Vinicius is trying every way he can.

32nd min.: Chance Real Madrid! A Kroos corner kick finds Jude Bellingham at the top of the box. One control and dribble move later he fires on goal, but Szczesny dives low to stop it.

27th min.: Hydration break.

22nd min.: Chance Real Madrid! Best chance of the game for the Spanish side. A through ball by Jude Bellingham is blocked and falls perfectly for Joselu, but his shot goes wide.

That was harder than it looked, and the Joselu haters will point out what a drop-off he is compared to Karim Benzema, but credit to Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny who closed the angle.

Real Madrid's defense has been all over the place.

19th min.: Goal Juventus! They picked apart Real Madrid! Federico Chiesa free on the left picks out the run into the box by Weston McKennie, who crosses it to a wide-open Tim Weah at the far post. They made it look easy!

17th min.: Chance Real Madrid! Vinicius moves central and fires a shot at goal, but it's right at goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Vinicus looks better when he's on the left than when he moves central.

15th min.: Chance Juventus! Chiesa takes the space behind right-back Lucas Vazquez and earns a corner which Juve nearly score on. But Madrid clear.

Juventus are loving to operate on the counter.

9th min.: Real Madrid have responded with a few crosses that Juve's 'keeper has had to deal with ... from right-back Lucas Vazquez and from left-back Fran Garcia. Madrid are not shy about pushing up those backs.

4th min.: YELLOW card to Bremer of Juventus. He held back Vinicius Jr, who's already causing issues.

3rd min.: Penalty Real Madrid? Vinicius goes down in the box, but the referee says that it was a fair challenge by Danilo on his compatriot. Vinicius wanted the penalty, but he didn't get it.

1st min.: Goal Juventus! Moise Kean scores it! Luka Modric coughs up the ball and Juventus go right down Real Madrid's throat. Weston McKennie takes a shot that hits the right post and the ball goes right to a wide-open Kean for the easy tap-in.

1st min.: Juventus kick off the match.
