If they want to win their first Champions League title, PSG will need to come from behind on the road after Bayern Munich went into Paris and came away with a 1-0 win in the first leg of their Round of 16 series.

The winning goal of the first leg was scored by former PSG academy player Kingsley Coman, who also scored the winning goal for Bayern in the 2020 Champions League final against PSG. Coman immediately raised his hands, refusing to celebrate out of respect for the fans of his former club.

And so PSG's poor run of form continued into European play, with the star-studded club now having lost three straight matches, including elimination in the Coupe de France. It did not help the French champions that they did not have their best player from the start of their Champions League first leg.

Star forward Kylian Mbappe picked up a thigh injury in league play and was forced to come off the bench for the Parisians, and that occurred only after PSG conceded. He put in a lively showing for a player who was not deemed fully fit, and he scored a goal in the last 10 minutes which was disallowed for an offside in the buildup.

The second leg will be played on Wednesday, March 8 at the Allianz Arena in Munich and with their attacking talent and a fully fit Mbappe, PSG will feel like they still have hope of qualifying for the quarterfinals.

PSG (4-4-2, right to left): 99-Donnarumma (GK) — 2-Hakimi (3-Kimpembe, 46'), 5-Marquinhos, 4-Ramos, 25-Mendes — 33-Zaire-Emery (8-Ruiz, 57'), 6-Verratti, 15-Danilo (17-Vitinha, 75'), 28-Soler (7-Mbappe, 57') — 30-Messi, 10-Neymar

PSG shrink again in a big spot

Championship teams know how to manage a match, impose their will, and remind everyone who's in control. PSG are far from being that team even under new manager Christopher Galtier, who many believed was capable of giving PSG an edge they didn't have in recent seasons. Time and again, PSG disappear from matches and they're unable to gain a handle of a game.

Bayern Munich bossed the match in the first half and had the best chances of the second half before PSG threw numbers forward in the final minutes.

PSG are Kylian Mbappe dependent

PSG were flat and uninspired before Kylian Mbappe came on the field in the 57th minute. He immediately gave the team acceleration, verticality, and speed that didn't exist in the side before he was introduced. Those same qualities are no longer in the toolkit of 31-year-old Neymar and 35-year-old Messi.

Mbappe was also absent in PSG's 3-1 loss to AS Monaco over the weekend and it was a similarly indifferent showing. It points to a squad that doesn't yet have an identity and the squad is a reflection of that. Are they meant to be a possession-based team? A counterattacking side? A pressing team? A team that leaves its mark with physicality? New manager Christophe Galtier is no closer to figuring it out.

Bayern, Nagelsmann make all the right moves

PSG may have the bigger names on the field, but Bayern looked like the better team and the better managed side. It's easy to forget that as of mid-February, Bayern have lost just one match all season and that came in the Bundesliga to Augsburg. They're also still perfect in the 2022/23 Champions League, winning every match.

Credit to Julian Nagelsmann who got the lineup, personnel and substitutions right. The 3-4-3 formation was solid and limited PSG to a single shot in the first half. The decision to start Kingsley Coman at wingback, Choupo-Moting over Thomas Muller at forward, and then bringing on Alphonso Davies at halftime all proved effective.

PSG vs Bayern Munich live updates, highlights from Champions League

Final: PSG 0-1 Bayern Munich

Final: It was a deserved win for Bayern Munich, although Kylian Mbappe nearly singlehandedly brought PSG back into the match. For three-quarters of the match Bayern were in complete control, with PSG only putting together a frantic response late in the match. The German club will be disappointed that one of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's shots didn't give them a second. They will know that if Kylian Mbappe is involved from the start in Munich, this series is far from over.

91st min.: Red card to Bayern. It's Benjamin Pavard who gets his second yellow card for a scything tackle on Lionel Messi and there's no question about that one.

90th min.: Four minutes of stoppage time.

84th min.: Chance PSG! Nuno Mendes with another run down the left and his cross finds Leo Messi whose shot is deflected. The pressure is mounting from PSG.

82nd min.: Disallowed goal! Kylian Mbappe scores on a cross from the left end line from Nuno Mendes. But after VAR review it was disallowed for an offside by Mendes on his run down the left.

75th min.: SUBS. Vitinha is on for PSG, while Bayern also makes two attacking subs with Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry coming into the match.

74th min.: Chance PSG! Best chance of the night for the home team with Kylian Mbappe making a run down the left and Yann Sommer makes the big stop off his chest. Neymar gets a shot off moments later but Mbappe was offside on the easy tap-in. Subs coming for both teams.

64th min.: Another chance Bayern. On the ensuing corner kick, Benjamin Pavard bangs a header on goal that Donnarumma saves on the line. Mbappe is on the field for PSG, but it's still all Bayern.

62nd min.: Chance Bayern! It's a Choupo-Moting scissors kick and Gigi Donnarumma stops it. Bayern's dangerous on the counter. One minute later Choupo-Moting takes another shot which Donnarumma sends off the right post.

57th min.: Subs PSG: Kylian Mbappe is on in place of Carlos Soler. Fabian Ruiz is also in the game. Manager Christophe Galtier reacts to going down at home and PSG look like they're moving to a 4-3-3 with Marquinhos at right-back.

53rd min.: Goal Bayern! Cross from the left and Kingsley Coman's volley touch goes under Gigi Donnarumma. The visitors are ahead and Coman, an ex-PSG player, doesn't celebrate his goal, holding his hands up in a sign of respect to the fans.

50th min.: PSG have come out with more verve and energy. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe has been warming up. Unclear if it's just for show, or whether he's really coming on.

46th min.: We're underway in the second half. A change for each team to start the second stanza. Alphonso Davies is on for Joao Cancelo, while Presnel Kimpembe is in for Achraf Hakimi which reports indicated was experiencing an injury issue.

Halftime: PSG 0-0 Bayern Munich

Halftime: If PSG supporters were looking for a sign that things were going to be OK with their team, they definitely didn't get it in the first half of this first leg. Bayern has dictated the match, and PSG have been resigned to defending.

The home team can't get any prolonged possession. They had just one shot in the entire first half and it wasn't even on goal. Lionel Messi and Neymar have been punchless with Sergio Ramos, Danilo Pereira and Gigi Donnarumma among the busiest and most effective players on defense so far.

Bayern will be happy with with the attitude shown and their ability to boss the game, but they haven't generated many clear-cut chances. Manager Julian Nagelsmann must be thinking this is a game his team can win. Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry could be factors off the bench for the German side.

43rd min.: Chance Bayern! It's the first and only real chance of the match and it's a ball that bounced out to Joshua Kimmich at the edge of the area. His drive went through a host of legs, but Gigi Donnarumma was surehanded.

36th min.: There's little happening here. PSG can't create much — or they're not bothering to — and they're not really applying much pressure. You get the distinct sense they want to win this tie on the road when they have a fully fit Kylian Mbappe. Or at least they don't want to lose it at home.

26th min.: Yellow card to Bayern's Benjamin Pavard for a foul on Neymar. That's the first yellow card of the match and the most action we've seen so far in the match.

20th min.: This is a snapshot of the first 20 minutes. Bayern coming at PSG and the home team trying to contain and concentrating on defending. This has not been a good start by a PSG team that's not been in form.

10th min.: Bayern are on the front foot, they're pressing well in the PSG half of the field and they're winning the ball. The visitors are looking more than comfortable at the Parc des Princes.

5th min.: Five minutes in and it's looking like a 3-4-3 from Bayern Munich. Kingsley Coman (left) and Joao Cancelo (right) are the wingbacks.

Meanwhile, for PSG Danilo Pereira is operating in midfield and it's more of a 4-4-2.

3rd min.: There was a special tifo by the PSG supporters.

1st min.: Bayern kick it off and after 30 seconds it's the ex-PSG man Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting with the shot toward goal that finished wide. Early statement of intent from the visitors.

1 min from kickoff: There's a long moment of silence for the victims of the earthquake that devastated Turkey and Syria.

10 mins from kickoff: Bayern are quietly having one helluva season.

14 mins from kickoff: Not promising for PSG supporters. Kylian Mbappe was absent from the pregame warmups. That can't be promising as far as his involvement in the match, or it could always be some gamesmanship to surprise Bayern later in the match.

17 mins from kickoff: Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann had a decision to make for his centre forward between Thomas Muller and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The latter won. Here's why:

20 mins from kickoff: Many believe that Yann Sommer was an excellent pickup by Bayern Munich to replace Manuel Neuer, but apparently they were also looking at Kasper Schmeichel.

30 mins from kickoff: Warmups are well underway. We're only a half-hour away from kickoff.

75 mins from kickoff: PSG's Warren Zaire-Emery will be making history when he takes the field against Bayern Munich:

90 mins from kickoff: The lineups are out. Kylian Mbappe is on the bench to start the match.

110 mins from kickoff: It's not exactly the way PSG were hoping to be coming into such a season-defining matchup. Three league losses in their last seven, elimination from the Coupe de France, injuries to Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, and a media maelstrom surrounding their other star Neymar.

115 mins from kickoff: There will be extra attention on former PSG and current Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who has already hurt his former club once before.

120 mins from kickoff: The all-time history between these two teams is pretty even though the Germans came away with the biggest of their matchups in the 2020 Champions League final.
