Two sporting greats can ensure their futures at the 2022 FIFA World Cup remain in their hands when Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski meet in Argentina and Poland's final game in Group C.

With the Copa America holders at risk of elimination against Mexico in their second match of the finals, seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi scored a sublime goal to kickstart a 2-0 win for his country.

Reigning FIFA Best Men's Player Lewandowski ended his absurdly long wait for a World Cup goal with Poland's second in a 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia to move them top of the table.

A draw could be enough to send both teams through depending on the result between Saudi Arabia and Mexico, but only a victory will be certain of sending either side into the Round of 16 as group winners.

Poland vs Argentina lineups

Krystian Bielik and Bartosz Bereszynski were both doubts to start Poland's win over Saudi Arabia but appeared to come through the game unscathed.

Piotr Zielinski volleyed in the first-half opener for a team who will look to prosper on the counter-attack, as they did against opponents who had shocked Argentina in their first game of the group stage.

Poland projected lineup (4-1-3-2 right to left): 1-Szczesny (GK) — 2-Cash, 15-Glik, 14-Kiwior, 18-Bereszynski — 10-Krychowiak —13-Kaminski, 20-Zielinski, 6-Bielik — 9-Lewandowski, 7-Milik

Defender Cristian Romero and midfielder Alejandro Gomez could be in contention to start for Argentina if they have returned to 100 percent fitness.

Coach Lionel Scaloni will surely be tempted to start Benfica's Enzo Fernandez, who transformed Argentina's midfield fluidity after coming on as a 57th-minute substitute against Mexico before curling in a splendid strike to seal victory.

Argentina projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left): 23-Martinez (GK) — 4-Montiel, 25-Martinez, 19-Otamendi, 8-Acuna — 7-De Paul, 24-Fernandez, 20-Mac Allister — 11-Di Maria, 22-Martinez, 10-Messi

Poland vs Argentina odds

After getting their campaign back on track following that initial defeat to the group underdogs, Argentina are odds-on to secure a win that would give them top spot.

Messi and his teammates may not want reminding that they had been on a record-threatening 36-match unbeaten run before beginning the finals poorly.

Gamblers backing Poland will be encouraged by their run of four consecutive clean sheets, and a draw will be enough for them to qualify regardless of the result in the group's other match.
