The 2023 Women's World Cup is proving to be a spectacle unlike any other as the tournament nears the knockout rounds in Australia and New Zealand.

With the field expanded to 32 teams for the first time in its history, the tournament should have more global appeal than ever before. Now, with just 16 teams remaining at the start of the knockout stage, half the field has been eliminated and only the upper echelon of global powers remain.

This FIFA showcase is considered the most wide open championship in women's history with several countries deemed capable of going all the way. The USA and a host of European nations are the favourites, with Japan and hosts Australia also in the mix.

USA-based sportsbook BetMGM claimed that they expected this to be "the most bet on Women's World Cup of all time", and that is likely to be true globally, too.

Updated Odds to win 2023 Women's World Cup

There have been some interesting changes to the overall odds since the start of the tournament.

Most notably, the United States is no longer the favourite. After putting together three straight disappointing performances in the group stage, the U.S. have dropped from their mantle, barely squeaking through to the knockout round after a near-miss against Portugal.

In their place, England have been tabbed as the most likely winners, having won all three of their group stage games while conceding just a single goal. An injury to Keira Walsh hasn't dampened the betting market, especially after pasting China 6-1 in the group finale.

The U.S. are now second-favourites, alongside Spain who retain their status as title contenders despite a 4-0 dismantling at the hands of Japan.

Japan have been impressive, and have climbed to fourth with 8-to-1 odds. Sweden are considered outsiders at 16-to-1 despite a quality group stage showing, while Germany sit fifth at 9-to-1 despite dropping a match to Colombia in group play.

Australia are considered amongst the favourites after impressing without Sam Kerr, and her injury status will be critical to the Matilda's shot at challenging for the title.

USA the favorites to win 2023 Women's World Cup

As two-time defending champions of the competition, it's no surprise that the U.S. are favorites to win the Women's World Cup.

However, they have stiff competition from other top nations, mostly from Europe. England, Spain, Germany and France are all considered heavy challengers to the U.S. throne, with the Lionesses given the biggest chance to spark a changing of the guard.

Vlatko Andonovski's side must weather some significant injuries ahead of the tournament, with Mallory Swanson suffering a serious knee injury back in March, plus the absences of Becky Sauerbrunn, Catarina Macario and Christen Press.

Should the United States win, they would become the first team ever to win three World Cup titles in a row, on either the men's or women's side.

Australia get World Cup host boost

The host is often given a significant shot to the arm at these major tournaments, and it's no different this time around for the Matildas of Australia, who are given odds that place them higher than their FIFA ranking would suggest.

Australia are ranked 10th in the world, and yet their latest odds have them as the sixth likely team to win it all even without Sam Kerr at 100 percent fitness.

New Zealand's Football Ferns at one point had odds which had them as 18th-best team in the field, before they were ousted in the group stage. They are ranked 26th in the world and that world ranking came to bear as they lost to the Philippines and drew against Switzerland.

Canada, China long shots to win Women's World Cup

Two teams with international pedigree were surprisingly low on the list to start, but it turns out the betting market was on to something as Canada and China were not expected to mount a serious challenge for the FIFA crown.

Canada, the defending Olympic champions ranked 7th in the world by FIFA, had the 11th-best odds to win it all, and were eliminated in the group stage as the attack never got going.

China, ranked 14th in the world by FIFA, have reached the knockout round on multiple occasions, including a runner-up result in 1999, but they were not given a sniff of the podium by the oddsmakers. They have their backs to the wall in their final group match against mighty England.
