Having flirted with CONCACAF Nations League disaster against Honduras, it might not feel like the optimum time for Mexico to be thinking about pitting their wits against the best teams in the Americas.
However, a return to the Copa America is on the agenda when the tournament lands in the United States in 2024 and Gold Cup-winning coach Jaime Lozano will hope to make an impact on this bigger stage.
It will be Mexico's first appearance at the tournament since being unceremoniously demolished 7-0 by eventual winners Chile at the Copa America Centenario in 2016.
Between 1993 and 2016, El Tri were invited to 10 consecutive editions. They reached the final on their inaugural appearance in 1993, losing 2-1 to Argentina on account of a Gabriel Batistuta brace.
They were runners-up once more in 2001, losing 1-0 to Colombia. Such a run this time around would be a huge surprise, but here's what Mexico must navigate if they are to make that dream a reality.
Mexico Copa America 2024 group
As the reigning CONCACAF Gold Cup champions, Mexico were seeded and automatically placed in Group B.
El Tri drew one of the most fascinating collection of teams, in what will surely be a roller coaster ride. They drew Ecuador out of Pot 2 and Venezuela from Pot 3, sides who both have secured positive results through the early portion of CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifying.
Then, they drew the toughest possibility from Pot 4 in Jamaica, who sport arguably their most talented roster ever with numerous players in top European leagues.
Group B
- Mexico
- Ecuador
- Venezuela
- Jamaica
Mexico Copa America 2024 group stage fixtures, schedule
No match for Mexico at the 2024 Copa America will be a cakewalk, and they'll open with a possible trap game out of the gates with Jamaica in Houston, Texas.
Following that tough opener, they travel west to face Venezuela in the gorgeous new SoFi Stadium outside Los Angeles, before finishing their group stage journey with a monumentally important match against Ecuador in Glendale, Arizona.

Mexico Copa America 2024 path to the final
Should Mexico secure advancement to the knockout stage by finishing top two in their group, they would draw a qualifier from Group A.
World Cup and Copa America holders Argentina are the seeded team in Group A, joined by a very soft trio of challengers in Peru, Chile, and Canada.
That makes winning Group B vitally important for Mexico, because it's almost guaranteed that Argentina will win Group A, meaning El Tri will want to avoid matching up against the defending champions in the quarterfinals. If they manage to win Group B, Mexico would play the Group A runner-up, who will present a much softer route to the semifinals.
However, an eventual matchup against Argentina would likely be unavoidable if Mexico continue to progress.
