Manchester United aim to put last week's 7-0 thrashing at Liverpool behind them as they welcome Southampton to the Theatre of Dreams for a Sunday Premier League match.

The Red Devils were clobbered by their arch rivals in their most recent league match, but bounced back to topple Real Betis in the Europa League 4-1 in midweek. Now they will hope to take out their frustrations from the Anfield embarrassment against last-place Southampton.

United were exceptional against their Spanish opponents on Thursday, conceding just a fluky first-half goal and scoring three times after the break to run away with their Europa League Round of 16 first leg. Even the much maligned Wout Weghorst got his first goal in a United shirt, while Marcus Rashford returned to the scoresheet, as did Bruno Fernandes and Antony.

Southampton were in free fall, but have picked up wins over Leicester City and Chelsea in their last three league games, boosting their survival hopes, but still with work to do to avoid the drop. They were lucky to escape with all three points against the Foxes in their latest match, as they weathered multiple misses by the Foxes.

Man United vs Southampton prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Man United (-275)
  • Against the spread lean (handicap): Man United -1.5 (-110)
  • Score prediction: Man United 2-0 Southampton

Southampton proved earlier this season that they can defend against this Red Devils side, but in current form will still need to improve greatly to catch their opponents off guard at Old Trafford.

United are unbeaten in their last 14 meetings against Southampton across all competition, although seven of those ended in a draw. However, the more telling streak for this game is United's 21-match home unbeaten run, with 19 wins and two draws since falling to Real Sociedad in the Europa League back in September.

Man United vs Southampton best bet

    • Pick: James Ward-Prowse 1+ shot on target
    • Odds: +110 (BetMGM)

You're going to give me the Premier League's best set-piece specialist to put one shot on frame at plus odds? It's a no-brainer.

Ward-Prowse has taken at least one shot in nine of his last 10 league games, and his 63.6 percent shooting accuracy is ninth in the Premier League among players with at least 30 attempts. If he takes even one shot, there's a good chance it will be on goal, and if he gets multiple, there's a virtual certainty this bet cashes.

Add in that Manchester United are happy to give away fouls (their 284 fouls conceded rank seventh in the Premier League), and Ward-Prowse has a great chance to put one on net, whether it be from open play or a dead ball situation.

Man United vs Southampton prop bet

    • Pick: Under 2.5 goals
    • Odds: +120 (BetMGM)

Southampton are the only Premier League team that's picked up more points away from home than at their own venue this season, and while that's not due to any boost in attacking prowess, it can be attributed to two other things: defensive improvement and luck.

The luck factor has not been in favour of Southampton this season. They have conceded 34.17 xGA this season, which is middle of the pack, but somehow, those chances have resulted in a massive 41 goals, despite being worth just 26.24 xGOT. That's abysmal luck, horrendous goalkeeping, or both.

Their luck should turn at some point, and the reverse fixture proves this Saints defence can indeed keep a lid on United, who will also have their sights set on upcoming cup matches which provide greater promise in the silverware department.

Catch the betting market napping at plus odds falling in love with a fun Man United side against an opponent whose issue isn't defensive structure.
