Chelsea are looking to compound Manchester United's recent misery by winning for the second time in four days when they visit Old Trafford in the Premier League on Wednesday.

United's performance in their tame 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday has increased the pressure on Erik ten Hag and his players and led to more speculation of unrest behind the scenes involving the manager.

Chelsea had to play the second half of their 3-2 win at home to Brighton & Hove Albion with 10 men on Sunday, and midfielder Conor Gallagher will be suspended for this game after his red card at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Like Chelsea, United have a long list of injuries, with influential midfielders Casemiro and Christian Eriksen set to be absent again.

The Sporting News looks at the team news and predicted lineups for this contest.

Erik ten Hag is still without holding midfielder Casemiro, defender Lisandro Martinez and Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen, who may not return until the start of 2024.

The main question is whether summer signing Mason Mount – who has been sidelined by a knock – is ready to return. Jadon Sancho is still unavailable for selection after his very public fallout with his manager.

Conor Gallagher's suspension is clearly a blow for Chelsea but there is better news for the Blues as Reece James and Marc Cucurella return from bans. Christopher Nkunku is nearing full fitness as fans eagerly await his debut, but this one may come too soon for the forward.

There is a chance that defender Malo Gusto and midfielder Romeo Lavia could return, as both had trained before missing out on the game against Brighton.

Man United starting 11

Man United projected lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Onana (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw — McTominay, Mainoo — Rashford, Fernandes, Garnacho — Hojlund.

  • Injured: Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Amad Diallo, Jonny Evans, Tyrell Malacia
  • Suspended: None

The manner of United's defeat at Newcastle will tempt Ten Hag to ring the changes, with a swap between Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony Martial in attack an obvious option.

Marcus Rashford joined Martial in being substituted at Newcastle. The forward has scored just a solitary goal from open play this season, with his apparent slackness in tracking back from the wing attracting fierce criticism by TV pundits. Antony could come back into the side on the right flank.

Chelsea starting 11

Chelsea projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Sanchez (GK) — Cucurella, Silva, Badiashile, James — Fernandez, Caicedo, Mudryk — Palmer, Jackson, Sterling.

  • Injured: Fofana, Lavia, Chilwell, Gusto, Nkunku, Chalobah, Chukwuemeka
  • Suspended: Gallagher

Cole Palmer came on as a substitute for Chelsea against Brighton and could cover the suspended Gallagher at United.

The returns of Cucurella and James give manager Mauricio Pochettino the opportunity to freshen his team on the flanks.
