Two teams desperate for a lifeline in the battle for a European place meet at Anfield as Liverpool host Tottenham in Premier League action on Sunday.

Spurs kept their slim Champions League hopes alive last time out as they salvaged a late draw with Manchester United, but sitting six points back in fifth and those above holding games in hand, it feels like shoring up a Europa League position is more realistic.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are back in seventh, but just a point behind Spurs and holding a game in hand, meaning a win in this match at Anfield would put them in control of their own destiny in the fight for European places.

Both sides have shown lethal frailties this season, especially in midfield, where improvements will need to be made in the summer. For now, they both have to press forward with what they currently possess, and both Jurgen Klopp and Ryan Mason have big jobs to do this weekend as they develop a plan to attack the opponent.

Liverpool vs Tottenham prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Draw (+360)
  • Handicap lean: Tottenham +1.5 (-175)
  • Score prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Tottenham

As Liverpool host Tottenham at Anfield, there is an expectation amongst the betting market for goals, and there's a good reason why. Both sides have struggled defensively thanks to injuries and poor form, and this could be set up as an entertaining, back-and-forth affair.

Liverpool are considered favourites at home, with oddsmakers not giving Ryan Mason and Tottenham much love for their comeback against Manchester United last time out.

    Liverpool vs Tottenham: best bet

    • Pick: Tottenham over 1.5 total goals
    • Odds: +210 (BetMGM)

Everyone expects goals in this match, and we do too, given the totally soft defensive units on both sides of the ball. Unfortunately, because the betting market has skewed the odds in that direction — the total and both teams to score are both squashed — we have to find openings in a few places that are unexpected.

Tottenham's goal total is one place where the odds have not been quite as inflated, even after they hung a pair on Manchester United last time out. Ryan Mason looks to have revitalised that Spurs squad with at least some grit and fightback, and they looked a determined side after halftime against the Red Devils.

They'll be up against Alisson, who has been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on goals conceded compared to xGOT faced, and that is a concern, but given the over 2/1 value in a game that's likely to be a shootout against a Liverpool defence that has conceded chances in bunches, there's a great chance Spurs can find the net more than once.

    Liverpool vs Tottenham prop bet

    • Pick: Tottenham over 4.5 corners
    • Odds: +215 (BetMGM)

Tottenham will know that their way back into the match against Manchester United was through vertical attacking play and set-piece collection, and it will be the same against Liverpool. After Spurs racked up six corners against United, Mason will target the same approach at Anfield.

Spurs already collect 5.4 corners per game in Premier League play, and in this match it'll be especially important. While Liverpool have allowed just a single goal off a corner this season, they have conceded a whopping 7.64 xG off corner situations, second only to Man United amongst the top nine teams in the Premier League table.

As a point of caution, Liverpool don't allow their opponents many corners — their 116 conceded this season ranks them third lowest in the Premier League. That makes it somewhat tempting to take it down a notch and look for Spurs to collect over 3.5 corners at -104, a reasonable total. Yet the jump in value to +215 for just one more corner is too enticing.

    Liverpool vs Tottenham flier bet

    • Pick: Harry Kane 1+ headed shot on target
    • Odds: +310 (BetMGM)

Given the above expectation for Tottenham to push for set-pieces and corners, it only follows that Harry Kane will be involved in the aerial attack.

Spurs don't have many proficient attacking options in the air, and targeting their talisman is the best course of action. Of Kane's 122 shots this Premier League season, 36 of them (or 30%) have come with his head, scoring nine of his 24 goals in that manner, helping Tottenham to 13 headed goals, the most in the English top flight.

Liverpool have only conceded five headed goals this season, but much of that has again been down to Alisson's great play, and we don't need Spurs to score here, just to give it a go. Trent Alexander-Arnold has been extremely poor in the air this season, and Joel Matip has been mediocre. While Virgil van Dijk is proficient in that regard, he's had a down season switching off at key moments.
