ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Liverpool kept their Champions League campaign on track with a much-needed 2-0 win over Rangers.

The Reds quickly quickly consigned Saturday's disappointing 3-3 draw with Brighton to the past as they dominated Gio van Bronckhorst's men en route to victory.

A comfortable evening got off to the perfect start when Trent Alexander-Arnold arrowed a free-kick home at the Anfield Road end.

And Mohamed Salah made sure of the points as he scored from the penalty spot after Luis Diaz had been tripped in the second period.

Jurgen Klopp's side will now hope that victory can help them build momentum going into a crucial Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday.

Liverpool vs. Rangers live updates and highlights: As it happened

FULLTIME: All over at Anfield and Liverpool claim a comfortable 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

90th min: A crunching challenge from Milner stops Rangers getting away on the break before Salah springs away and forces McGregor into a save.

An exciting finish to this one.

85th min: Sakala speeds in behind the Liverpool defence and hammers the ball across goal but a brilliant Tsimikas clearance gets it away!

That could have set up an interesting finish.

74th min: Nunez involved in creating a good chance for Firmino before the linesman's flag goes up late.

He may not have scored here, but the Uruguayan has been incredibly lively.

66th min: Two changes for Rangers as Tillman and Davis make way for Sakala and Jack.

53rd min: GOAL! Mohamed Salah steps up and coolly dispatches the spot-kick down the middle as McGregor dives. The Reds have their cushion.

52nd min: Luis Diaz collects a raking pass from Jordan Henderson and drives at the box where Leon King clumsily brings him down.

Penalty.

46th min: Back under way at Anfield.

HALFTIME: The players leave the field after 45 minutes of Allan McGregor v Darwin Nunez, briefly broken up by a brilliant Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick.

Rangers will be relieved to be just a single goal down.

41st min: Another chance for Nunez, but again he is foiled by McGregor after a run in behind the Rangers defence.

The Uruguayan could do with putting one of these away for the sake of his confidence and to ease Liverpool nerves.

34th min: Big chance for Liverpool.

Henderson's lofted ball in behind finds Nunez but he can't follow up a brilliant first touch with a confident finish, as McGregor palms the shot away well.

28th min: Watch Alexander-Arnold's stunning free-kick (UK only).

25th min: Plenty of the ball for Liverpool since that goal but not an awful lot of cutting edge.

In fairness, that owes a lot to Rangers sticking to their defensive task and keeping a close eye on those four forwards.

7th min: GOAL! Liverpool take the lead!

The hosts win a free-kick in a promising position when Nunez is upended outside the box and, after a seemingly endless deliberation over how it will be taken, Alexander-Arnold calmly steps up and bends the ball into the bottom corner.

He needed that goal after a week in which his form has been heavily scrutinised.

40 mins from kickoff: Both sets of fans creating a wonderful atmosphere here at Anfield.

Two iconic clubs going head-to-head in one of Europe's most famous stadiums - what's not to love?

60 mins from kickoff: Some big, big calls from Jurgen Klopp tonight as he tries to get his team going again.

Darwin Nunez trusted with a rare start as he looks to kickstart his Liverpool career, and being joined by so many attackers should certainly create space.

It's also interesting to see Fabinho pulled out of the firing line after a slow start to the campaign by his high standards.

80 mins from kickoff: TEAM NEWS is here!

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Tsimikas, Henderson, Thiago, Salah, Jota, Diaz, Nunez.

100 mins from kickoff: A tartan-covered matchday programme and haggis being served as a pre-match meal here at Anfield as Liverpool embrace hosting Scottish opposition.

Incredibly, this is the first time these two clubs have ever met in a competitive fixture.
