ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Liverpool needed two late Mohamed Salah goals to move top of the Premier League by beating Everton 2-0 in a hard-fought Merseyside derby.
The Toffees looked to be in for a typically torried afternoon at Anfield when Ashley Young was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half.
However, it took their rivals until the 75th minute to open the scoring, Salah doing the honours from the spot after the VAR had highlighted a Michael Keane handball in the box.
It was a helping hand the Reds had been in desperate need of given the sluggish nature of their performance, but they added gloss to the scoreline late on when Salah finished off a breakaway.
And, in truth, Jurgen Klopp will care little about how the three points were achieved after his side moved to the summit by piling more Anfield misery on their neighbours.

FULLTIME: LIVERPOOL 2-0 EVERTON
97th min: GOAL! SALAH! 2-0 TO LIVERPOOL!
That should be that, then. Liverpool are defending their own box when Mac Allister gets them away on the break in squeezing a pass out to Nunez.
The Uruguayan gallops away with the Reds in a two-v-one situation and picks the perfect moment to slip in Salah, who passes it beyond a stranded Pickford. Game over.

96th min: Szoboszlai shows lovely feet on the left-hand side to leave two Everton defends in his wake but his shot is completely miscued and doesn't threaten the goal.
90th min: Nine minutes to be added on!!! Could there be late drama?
87th min: Nunez almost forces Branthwaite to put through his own net with a powerful cross the left of the Everton box.
The Toffees defender does well, however, to nod it wide of the post.
80th min: Arnaut Danjuma on for Amadou Onana for Everton as they chase the game. Liverpool, meanwhile, swap stand-in left-back Luis Diaz for Joe Gomez.
75th min: GOAL! SALAH! 1-0 TO LIVERPOOL!
The man known as the Egyptian king steps up and slams the ball into the right-hand side of the net with Pickford rooted to the spot.

73rd min: PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL!
Huge claims for a spot-kick as a Diaz cross hits the outstretched arm of Keane. The referee goes for a quick look on the screen and hands the hosts a huge chance to take the lead.
67th min: Klopp responds immediately, bringing in Joel Matip for Konate.
65th min: Konate clips Beto as he attempts to race away in behind and is very, very lucky to avoid a second yellow given what we've seen in this game.
61st min: Everton making a change now as Beto takes the place of Calvert-Lewin up top.
Meanwhile, Liverpool swap Tsimikas and Gravenberch for Elliott and Nunez. That looks like Diaz at left-back - which is a choice!
56th min: Onana shepherds the ball out of play under pressure from Diaz and ends up in the Kop for his troubles.
He looks hurt as he walks away and no real surprise - he took a real tumble.
51st min: Everton have a sniff of a break as Konate steps out of position and he feels he has no choice but to drag down Onana and take the booking.
46th min: Two changes at the break from Everton and it would be fair to say they are defensive ones. Michael Keane and Nathan Patterson enter fray, replacing Dwight McNeil and Jack Harrison.
HALFTIME: LIVERPOOL 0-0 EVERTON
Everton down to 10 men thanks to that Ashley Young red card but it's all square at the break at Anfield. Liverpool have threatened but not enough to think that a goal is by any means a certainty in the second half.
45th min: A pretty incredible stat: Ashley Young has become the first player to be sent off against Liverpool in a Premier League match for two bookable offences since... Sadio Mane.
Mane has since signed for Liverpool, won every major honour available, left for Bayern Munich, then moved to Al Nassr.
40th min: Liverpool really pushing in the aftermath of that red card but the closest they come for their pressure is Alexander-Arnold driving over from distance.
37th min: RED CARD - ASHLEY YOUNG!
Well, we said Everton's defenders would have to be careful, and unfortunately for them they haven't.
Young tries to hold up Diaz as he enters the box but dives in desperately as the Colombian glides past him. The referee gives himself thinking time but he has no choice - it's a second yellow and a sending off.
It's a silly challenge from a player of such experience.
32nd min: Tarkowski comes through Gravenberch after a neat little spin and he sees a yellow card as a result.
Two members of the Everton backline now on bookings. They'll have to be careful.
26th min: Liverpool lose it in the centre of the park and Onana spots Alisson off his line... but his long-range attempt is shanked and dribbles well wide.
18th min: Ashley Young the first to go in the referee's notebook after hacking down Diaz as he looked to escape down the Liverpool left.
He can probably have few arguments with that one.
13th min: Liverpool break at pace from an Everton corner through Szoboszlai, who looks to have slipped Diaz in for the opening goal on the left-hand side of the box.
But Young somehow gets back to make an incredible sliding challenge on the Colombian, which surrenders a corner that the visitors defend well. Great passage of play.
7th min: Liverpool settling into this now and almost create danger when Tsimikas sends in a cross from the left that has the Everton defence scrambling.
They get it away through Onana in the end but the hosts starting to assert themselves now.
1st min: Encouragement for the visitors in the very first minute as Dominic Calvert-Lewin heads a left-wing cross goalward. It's straight at Alisson but Everton will take a lot from that early opportunity.
KICKOFF: EVERTON GET THE GAME UNDER WAY
15 mins to kickoff: The players out doing their warm-ups and, somewhat incredibly given the weather on the walk up to the ground, Anfield is bathed in sunshine. Perfect conditions for a derby.
45 mins to kickoff: So, Everton unchanged from their big win over Bournemouth, as you might expect. Liverpool, meanwhile, make four changes due to a combination of injury, suspension and travel during the international break.
A big opportunity for Ryan Gravenberch to impress on his first Premier League start.
1 hr to kickoff: TEAM NEWS IS IN! Check out the line-ups above.
1.5 hrs to kickoff: Some early team news emerging from the Liverpool side of things, with Trent Alexander-Arnold part of the pre-match walk despite reports emerging this morning that he may have been involved in a car accident overnight. Reds youngster Calum Scanlon also involved - perhaps a chance for him to be on the bench in the absence of Andy Robertson.
2 hrs to kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of Liverpool vs Everton in the Premier League. The hosts are out to build on what has been an encouraging start to the new season but come up against opponents whose underlying numbers suggest they may have deserved better than their modest points total. So, could a shock be on the cards?

Liverpool vs Everton live stream, TV channel
Everton ended their long winless Premier League streak at Anfield in 2021 but victories at the home of their rivals are still rare.
Klopp's reshaped Liverpool remain a force to be reckoned with and Sean Dyche is expected to go with a rigid tactical setup in this game.
