Kylian Mbappe contract, salary at PSG

Kylian Mbappe joined PSG in the summer of 2017 from AS Monaco, just 19 years old when the Parisians paid an eye-watering €180 million for him.

Upon his arrival in the French capital, he initially joined on loan with an option to buy, but one year later PSG triggered the option, with Mbappe signing a four-year contract.

That contact expired in the summer of 2022, and the France international garnered a furious following as to where he would play next. Despite massive speculation that he would join Spanish side Real Madrid, Mbappe performed a U-turn and decided to stay at the French club, signing a new three-year contract with PSG worth upwards of €250 million in salary alone, and could potentially be worth upwards of €630 million according to some reports.

According to reports upon the signing of his new contract, including from the New York Times and The Guardian, Mbappe's newest deal pays him €25 million over each of the three years after taxes, for a total of €75 million in after-tax salary. He also earned a €100 million signing bonus just for agreeing to stay at the club.

In before tax figures that have been recently disseminated, according to U.S.-based journalist Zack Lowy who shared numbers first stemming from reports in France, Mbappe's gross salary of €72 million per year is supplemented by the aforementioned signing bonus worth €180 million before tax, payable in three separate installments throughout the life of the contract. It also features a "loyalty bonus" which totals €240 million before tax, which is paid out in three yearly installments and earned upon Mbappe's presence on the PSG roster. The difference between the signing bonus and the loyalty bonus is that the signing bonus is earned in full based on simply Mbappe's signing of the contract, while each installment of the loyalty bonus is earned by Mbappe staying with PSG each subsequent year. The loyalty bonus increases slightly each year, with a €70 million figure triggered in 2022, which rises to €80 million in 2023 and €90 million in 2024.

Finally, while Mbappe's contract was initially reported as a traditional three-year contract, French publications now indicate that it is actually a two-year contract with a player option for a third season. This is critical because it gives Mbappe the power to force a transfer in the summer of 2023. If he wished to secure a move, he could inform the club that he does not intend on triggering his third-year option, leaving PSG with just months to secure a transfer or lose one of the world's most valuable players for free, which would be a devastating financial blow to the club.

There are also reports that Mbappe's new contract hands him the power to make certain executive decisions at the club, with some reporting he has a say in hiring a new manager or signing new players, but those reports have been refuted by both the club and the player.

The new deal has not quieted speculation that Mbappe could still join Real Madrid, even as early as this coming offseason. While he's on a three-year deal at PSG currently, that contract length allows PSG to retain negotiating power in any potential transfer deals, allowing the club to earn a likely hefty transfer fee for his eventual departure rather than seeing Mbappe walk away for free.

Kylian Mbappe Monaco, PSG club career

Kylian Mbappe began his football career as a six-year-old for a small club AS Bondy, located in the northeastern suburbs of Paris. There, he was coached by his father Wilfried.

From there, he moved to elite French football academy Clairfontaine in 2011, being wooed by both Real Madrid and Chelsea with training invites before deciding to sign with AS Monaco in 2013.

Mbappe earned his first taste of first-team action in 2015, debuting in early December, coming off the bench late in a league match against Caen. He would earn his first career assist days later against Tottenham in a 4-1 Europa League defeat, and would score his first career professional goal against FC Chambly in the Coupe de France.

The next season, Mbappe exploded onto the scene as a 19-year-old, leading Monaco to the 2016/17 Ligue 1 title by scoring 15 goals and assisting 11 others. They nearly did the domestic double, falling in the Coupe de la Ligue final to PSG.

Mbappe would move to PSG for an incredible €180 million fee that next summer, sealing one of the most expensive transfers of all-time. At PSG, he would go on to win four league titles in five seasons and reach the Champions League final before his contract expired in the summer of 2022. Amidst massive speculation that Mbappe would move to Real Madrid on a free transfer, he opted to re-sign with the French club, hoping to push them towards a coveted Champions League title.

Mbappe is an admitted Real Madrid fan, leading to the widespread speculation that he would join Los Blancos. Despite turning the Spanish club down, he voiced his support for Real Madrid in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool.

Kylian Mbappe international career with France

Despite his young age, Kylian Mbappe has become one of the best players in the world, lending his services to the French national team.

Heading into the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Mbappe had collected 59 caps for France, scoring 28 goals.

The crowning achievement for Mbappe with the national team was hoisting the 2018 World Cup title, scoring four goals and assisting another across the tournament. He bagged the final goal of a 4-2 finals victory over Croatia to hoist the trophy, being named the Young Player of the Tournament in the process. He became the second-youngest player to score in a World Cup final, behind only Pele.

Since that triumph, however, it has been a struggle for Mbappe and France to stay atop the mountain. They were eliminated from the Euro 2020 (which took place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) in the Round of 16 by Switzerland on penalties, with Mbappe missing the only penalty of the shootout to see France out.

Les Bleus would recover to win the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League crown, but have gone on to narrowly avoid relegation from Nations League A in the 2022/23 edition thanks to just one win in six group stage matches leading up to the 2022 World Cup.

At the tournament in Qatar, Mbappe claimed the Golden Boot with eight goals, but despite his hat-trick in the final against Argentina, France would lose the decisive match on penalties.

Kylian Mbappe net worth

As of May, 2022, Forbes listed Kylian Mbappe's net worth at €44 million, but that has surely risen since.

Since that posting, Mbappe has signed his new PSG contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and been named as the cover athlete of the EA Sports FIFA 23 video game.

Mbappe has endorsement deals with apparel company Nike, watch makers Hublot, Chinese dairy company Mengniu, cologne company Christian Dior, and sunglass company Oakley. He was previously the cover athlete of FIFA 21 and FIFA 22.

In mid-September, an article by Sportico rated Mbappe as the highest-paid football athlete in the world, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The article estimates that Mbappe will earn $125 million in 2022: $105 million for his on-field play and $20 million in endorsement deals.

Kylian Mbappe wife and family

Kylian Mbappe was born in 1998 in Paris, France in his hometown suburb of Bondy.

Mbappe's father, Wilfried, is originally from Cameroon and serves as his agent. His mother, Fayza, is of Algerian descent and is a former professional handball player with AS Bondy.

The PSG man also has a brother, Jires Kembe Ekoko, who was adopted by the Mbappe family when he was 6 years old. Ekoko played professional football with Stade Rennes, Al Nasr, and his latest club, Turkish side Bursaspor, who released him in 2019. Ekoko, a former France youth international, is now 34 years old and has not played professionally in three years.

The French star is to this point unmarried. He had been dating French actress Emma Smet, daughter of French songwriter David Halladay. However, Mbappe has recently been seen with French model Ines Rau, who made headlines as the first transgender Playboy cover model.
