An early-season Milan derby will set the stage for both sides to carry forward the rest of the campaign as Inter Milan take on arch rivals AC Milan at the San Siro on Sunday.

It's been a tough start to the year for AC Milan and new head coach Paulo Fonseca, who has secured just one win through four Serie A matches, plus defeat to Liverpool in their first UEFA Champions League game a few days ago.

American star Christian Pulisic has been electric for his side, scoring three goals and assisting two, but they have struggled to defend and hold onto leads. The USMNT star scored three minutes into the European match at San Siro on Tuesday but they would capitulate in short order, falling by a 3-1 score.

Inter, meanwhile, started strong but were held to draws in each of their last two games, held by Monza in league play before a 0-0 stalemate against Manchester City in the Champions League. It's been difficult go reigning Golden Boot winner Lautaro Martinez, who has yet to score this season.

Inter vs. AC Milan lineups, predicted starting 11, team news

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi benched Lautaro Martinez for the midweek UEFA Champions League match against Manchester City, but the Argentine should return here to replace Mehdi Taremi up front. It's also possible that Henrikh Mkhitaryan returns after coming off the bench in European play, but like Martinez, he has also struggled for form early in the campaign.

The only major injury issue for Inter is the absence of Tajon Buchanan, who is close to returning from his broken leg but will be eased back into action. Marko Arnautovic missed the Champions League game with an illness but should be available for selection.

Federico Dimarco returned to training this week after missing the City match and could be involved from the start if he can come through Inter's final session on Saturday.

Inter predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Sommer (GK) — Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni — Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Zielinski, Augusto — Thuram, L. Martinez

Injured: Buchanan, Dimarco (doubt)
Suspended: None

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was forced off from their midweek Champions League defeat to Liverpool after taking a beating all game, but he got good news as scans showed no damage, and he should be available for selection. That's important considering backup Marco Sportiello is still recovering from his fluky hand injury from preseason.

Like Maignan, Davide Calabria is also fine after coming off the Champions League game injured, but they are still without Malick Thiaw and Ismael Bennacer who both have multi-week ankle injuries, with the latter expected to miss the first half of the season. Alessandro Florenzi is also down for a number of months after an ACL tear.

AC Milan predicted XI (4-2-3-1, right to left): Maignan (GK) — Calabria, Tomori, Pavlovic, Hernandez — Fofana, Loftus-Cheek — Pulisic, Reijnders, Leao — Morata

Injured: Thiaw, Bennacer, Florenzi
Suspended: None
