The 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the continent's premier international football competition began on January 13, 2024 as hosts Ivory Coast defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0.
Ever since its inception in the year 1957, AFCON has taken its place as one of the most prestigious international tournaments, growing year on year. It takes place every two years, but was shifted to 2024 this time thanks to adverse weather conditions during summer 2023.
In 2022, Senegal won their first title and the Lions of Teranga will be looking to go back to back with another title this time around. Ivory Coast on home turf cannot be counted out, while suprise World Cup semifinalists Morocco are also among the favourites with Algeria, Egypt and Nigeria.
