Morocco, darlings of the 2023 Women's World Cup, embark on an historic 90 minutes as they take on FIFA's fifth-ranked team France in the Round of 16.

Morocco, ranked 72nd in the world and in their first ever Women's World Cup, were one of three African nations that qualified for the knockout stage — the first time in this competition's history that has been accomplished. After being blown out 6-0 by Germany in their opener, they regrouped and beat both South Korea and Colombia to secure advancement, getting revenge on the Germans in the process as the European giants were eliminated at their expense.

France too bounced back from their opening slip, held to a scoreless draw by Jamaica before topping both Brazil and Panama en route to winning Group F.

These two nations met in the semifinals of the most recent men's World Cup and produced a thriller, which saw France emerge as 2-0 victors. Neutrals will hope this game provides similar entertainment value.

France vs Morocco prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Draw (+675)
  • Score prediction: France 0-0 Morocco

Considering the gulf in rankings between these two sides, France are heavy favourites coming into the match, with Morocco not given much of a chance to secure another upset.

Yet the women can take a page out of the playbook of their male counterparts, who were big underdogs at the 2022 World Cup against every knockout-stage opponent, including +425 dogs against Portugal, and +650 dogs against France, reaching the semifinal and performing admirably against top European nations.

There's reason to believe the African nation can do the job here, and brushing them aside would be foolhardy.

    France vs Morocco: best bet

    • Pick: Under 2.5 goals
    • Odds: +150 (BetMGM)

Even if France manage to emerge from this match victorious, it will be difficult for them to breach this suddenly stout Morocco back line.

Morocco qualified for the knockout stage on the backs of two 1-0 victories over South Korea and Colombia, but these weren't games where they snatched a goal and then defended against waves of pressure — no, they held those two teams to just six combined shots on target (all by Colombia) and one "big chance". Even prior to the World Cup, Morocco held both Italy and Switzerland off the scoresheet in a pair of July friendlies.

The France front line is prolific, led by Eugenie Le Sommer and Kadidiatou Diani, but Morocco should manage to hang tough to keep this game tense.

    France vs Morocco prop bet

    • Pick: Morocco double chance
    • Odds: +425 (BetMGM)

France are beatable on both ends of the pitch, and we saw as much in the group stage. They were scored on by Brazil, and Panama grabbed three goals against their backups in the group finale. Up front, they were held by Jamaica who put together a wonderful defensive performance across the three games.

Morocco have a monumental task in front of them, and France certainly could repeat what Germany did to this African side in the opening group match — a 6-0 demolition. Yet there's plenty of reason to believe the Cinderella story continues. Of all the top-tier sides, France feel the most fallible, and this draw could be in Morocco's favour.
