England vs. Switzerland final score: Euro 2024 result as Southgate's perfect five prevail amid quarterfinal penalty drama image

England were penalty-perfect as they beat Switzerland 5-3 on spot-kicks in Dusseldorf to book a place in the Euro 2024 semifinals following a 1-1 draw.

Switzerland dispatched holders Italy in the previous round and were 15 minutes from the final four when Breel Embolo broke the deadlock in a tense encounter.

Bukayo Saka found a fabulous equaliser five minutes later and the Arsenal star put bitter memories of his Euro 2020 final failure to bed with a coolly dispatched effort in the shootout.

Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Ivan Toney were similarly flawless and although Fabian Schar, Xherdan Shaqiri and Zeki Amdouni were successful, a tame effort from the magnificent Manuel Akanji was kept out by Jordan Pickford. It meant Trent Alexander-Arnold could enjoy the best moment of his often turbulent England career when he crashed beyond Yann Sommer.

England will face the winners of the remaining quarterfinal between the Netherlands and Turkey.

Friday's quarters, where Spain beat Germany at the death and France broke Portugal's hearts on penalties, each went to extra time and this game soon had the look of going the distance after neither side mustered a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Gareth Southgate's team were much improved in a 3-4-3 setup, however, pressing effectively and smoother in possession with Kobbie Mainoo and Phil Foden in central areas.

Saka remained wide on the right and gave Switzerland wingback Michel Aebischer a torrid time, although captain Harry Kane was again worryingly listless at centre-forward.

Switzerland gradually seized the initiative after the break and Embolo's close-range finish in the 75th minute looked like sending them through to the semifinals of the World Cup or Euros for the first time. But Saka had other ideas as he cut inside and unleashed a brilliant strike that went in off the post.

The crossbar came to England's rescue towards the end of a meandering period of extra time when Shaqiri's attempt direct from a corner left Pickford scrambling. Southgate also lost Kane to an apparent injury but his team would not be denied.

England vs. Switzerland penalty shootout as it happened at Euro 2024

The England fans are hollering their 2021 anthem Sweet Caroline. Their team were better, still not great but if you look beyond history, voodoo and goodness knows what else, this squad has some phenomenal penalty takers. Palmer, Saka and Toney all among the very best in the business. They all scored, with Saka enjoying a moment of deserved redemption after his Euro 2020 despair. Bellingham also converted in swaggering fashion and it's hard not to be pleased for Alexander-Arnold, who has taken a an unfair battering over the course of his England career. Akanji was the only taker to fail. The Manchester City man is in tears, having been phenomenal all tournament as he was all season. The fine line between agony and ecstasy play out in Dusseldorf. Thanks for joining us.

9th penalty: Alexander-Arnold kicks for the semifinals. Nails it, England are into the semifinals of Euro 2024 with five perfect penalties. "Pressure is for tyres!" honks Alan Shearer on commentary.

8th penalty: Andouni must score. Pickford went far too soon and he rolls it home. England 4-3 Switzerland.

7th penalty: Toney, the penalty master. Slow run. Sommer guesses right but three goalies aren't saving that. England 4-2 Switzerland.

6th penalty: Shaqiri, national hero. Pickford guesses right but the power beats him. England 3-2 Switzerland.

5th penalty: Saka. Missed against Italy three years ago. Brilliant for Arsenal from 12 years... caresses it into the right corner. England 3-1 Switzerland.

4th penalty: Schar. Pickford moving and he sends him the wrong way. Switzerland on the board. England 2-1 Switzerland.

3rd penalty: Bellingham, staggers a straight run, sits Sommer down and slots home. Ooofff! England 2-0 Switzerland.

2nd penalty: Akanji, who has had a fabulous tournament. Pickford taking his time and the referee has a word. Pickford saves down to this left! Tame penalty. England 1-0 Switzerland.

1st penalty: Palmer, sends Sommer the wrong way. Ice cold. England 1-0 Switzerland.

Kyle Walker, now wearing the armband for England, appears to have won the toss.Cole Palmer steps up first. 10/10 from the spot for Chelsea this season.

England vs. Switzerland live updates, highlights, and commentary from Euro 2024

Fulltime

Stones pumps one towards Toney, Zubar knocks him over but you're not getting a penalty for that at this hour. Penalties!

120+1 mins: We're into the solitary added minute. Shaw crosses towards Toney but Amdouni intervenes. Walker tries the pull-back, it's half cleared. Saka can't get it into the box.

119 mins: Double change for Switzerland, with Sierro and Amdouni into the fray. That could be for penalties but they look the side most likely to win it right now. There it is from Amdouni and Pickford saves! Another cross in and Widmar volleys over. Southgate's men hanging on for a shootout.

117 mins: Pickford unsure whether to stay or go, Zubar can't capitalise and it's a corner. Oh my word Shaqiri hits the crossbar direct from the corner! He definitely meant that and Pickfurst was beaten.

115 mins: Alexander-Arnold on for Foden. He goes over to the right, Saka to the left. Toney licks his lips in the middle.

113 minsChance for Switzerland! Widmar's attempt is blocked and Eze hacks clear

109 mins: Kane and Akanji chasing a ball towards the touchline and there's some tumbling. Kane looks hurt there. Toney is ready to come on. Is it for the captain? It is, off goes Harry Kane! Shaqiri on for the goalscorer Embolo for Switzerland.

Kickoff: 2nd Half (ET)

Phil Foden gets us underway. Expect to see England penalty specialist Ivan Toney if the score stays this way.

Halftime

Fifteen minutes for these sides to avoid penalties. Switzerland beat France and lost to Spain in consecutive Euro 2020 shootouts. England looked to have laid demons to rest in that regard — including a Nations League shootout win over Switzerland in 2019 — before falling to Italy in the Euro 2020 final before Harry Kane had a moment of personal torment against France in Qatar. I only say all this because neither side looked particularly like pinching a goal in those 15 minutes just gone.

102 mins: England come again, again through Saka. Bellingham shuffles to find room. His first shot is blocked by Xhaka and Sommer pouches the second.

101 mins: Palmer helps to pick up the pieces around Kane. Foden has a fairly ludicrous shot that is blocked.

100 mins: Schar gets himself all twisted up and has to drip Eze. He's on a yellow. The referee reminds him of this quite sternly.

98 mins: Swiss change with Zakaria on for Ndoye.

97 mins: Ohh, Walker nearly gets himself into a mess with Zuber close by. Pickford hammers clear.

95 mins: Palmer into some of his best, swaggering work. Saka's cross can't reach Kane. Rice fizzes a stunning long-ranger from the loose ball and Sommer tips behind!

Kickoff: 1st Half (ET)

Off we go again. Switzerland seem keen to target England's left side, where Eze looks a little uncomfortable out of possession at left-back.

Fulltime

For the fourth consecutive time in a European Championship knockout game, England go to extra time. They looked doomed when Embolo gave Switzerland the lead with 15 minutes to go. The previously impassive Southgate then sprung into action with a triple change that changed the completion of the game and Saka found a wonderful equaliser. So credit to the manager up to a point, but there was a meandering 15 minutes before Switzerland's goal where a more decisive coach could have acted and averted the sapping extra half hour to come.

90+3 mins: Glorious ball from Schar but Embolo and Ndoye confuse each other and Zuber honks his shot off target.

90+2 mins: Schar with a cross into the box and Stones pulls a clearance from his Barnsley days and boots it out for a throw.

90 mins: Sommer punches Foden's free-kick clear, Palmer delivers a devilish one back into the box and Akanji heads clear. Now Switzerland can break. They have enough numbers but Ndoye puts his shot into orbit.

89 mins: Schar with a fairly blundering foul. Switzerland need him to get his head back on.

88 mins: Shaw with a lovely decoy run and Eze shimmies inside. He goes for power and drags wide of the near post.

86 mins: Switzerland are penned in now. England want to finish this in the 90 after those attacking substitution. Bellingham toes a cross over everyone.

80 minsGOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!! Bukayo Saka!!!!

If it was going to be any England attacker today, it was going to be the fabulous Saka. Switzerland give him too much room to shuffle inside and he arrows a shot into the far corner via the inside of the post.

77 mins: Palmer, Eze and Shaw getting ready to come on. Should Southgate have acted sooner. His 100th game is set to become his last at the moment.

75 minsGOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!! Breel Embolo!!!!

It's been on the cards and Embolo's industry is rewarded. Switzerland work a lovely move down the right around a tired-looking England. Stones can only half block the cross and Embolo gets there in front of Walker.

69 mins: Ndoye darting across the edge of the box, avoiding tackles and Kane comes all the way back to disposses.

67 mins: Kane grapples with Akanji and appears to catch him in the eye. He's booked, which feels a little harsh for the offence in question.

66 mins: Excellent cross from Rodriguez. First Konsa and then Stones can't clear and Aebischer creams a lovely volley over the bar.

64 mins: Double change for Switzerland as Widmer and Zuber replace Rieder and Vargas. No activity on the England bench as yet.

62 mins: This is Switzerland's best spell. Ndoye gets down the right and Walker is alert to nip in front of Embolo and clear.

60 mins: Short corner to Reider, who didn't really seem to be expecting it, Back to Rodriguez who launches it down the channel and Saka heads behind.

59 mins: Switzerland soak up some meandering England possession and launch it to Ndoye over the top. Konsa stick to his task and he combines with Vargas and wins the corner.

57 mins: Dangerous cross from Rodriguez towards Embolo but Konsa puts in some more great muscular defensive work and Pickford can mop up. The Aston Villa man has put in such an astute performance so far.

55 mins: Foden back to pick Xhaka's pocket. Mainoo looks to play the ball in behind but Aebischer recovers.

51 mins: Ladies and gentlemen, we've had a shot on target. Embolo bounces into Konsa, turns and scuffs an attempt at Pickford. Konsa stood his ground well there but appears to have jarred his knee.

47 mins: Bellingham gets to stretch his legs. Can't find Kane, he probably should have looked to Trippier outside him. The Newcastle man snaps in to win the second ball and keep the attack going. Here's Saka, who has a shot blocked.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

Off we go again. No changes for either side.

Halftime

Switzerland look to break through Ndoye from the corner but Konsa holds his ground, wins a free-kick from Konsa and that's that. England have been fairly dominant and much better out of possession in their 3-4-3. They're still lacking creativity as a collective and Harry Kane is still frustratingly on the margins.

45 mins: Saka round the outside of Aebisher, whose had a pretty torrid time of things. Xhaka makes a last ditch intervention to smother Mainoo's shot and it's a corner. Straight into Sommer's gloves.

43 mins: Saka, easily the most enterprising attacking player on show so far, cuts inside and holds off Xhaka before having a shot blocked.

41 mins: A lot of control for England, which is a market improvement to their previous displays in this tournament. Still not a great deal of note happening in an attacking sense.

36 mins: Saka again into a nice crossing position after fine work from Bellingham. Saka with another dangerous cross that Bellingham dummies but it runs through to Sommer.

28 mins: Saka bustles past Aebischer. Drills in a low call but Akanji is there again before any England player.

25 mins: Embolo into the box, good block from Konsa, who has started confidently on his full major tournament debut.

24 mins: Decent enough start by England but that's another basically rubbish set-piece, this time from Foden. It's notable how much less Southgate's team have threatened from dead balls without the threat of Harry Maguire in this tournament. On the other hand, that's excellent pressing from Foden to startle his club mate Akanji as Switzerland restart.

22 mins: Kane gets up to meet the corner but it's effectively a clearance. Trippier's corner swung out of play anyway. Well done everyone.

21 mins: Foden flips a delightful ball over the top for Saka, who drives a ball into the six-yard box. He's entitled to ask Kane to be buying a ticket there. England corner.

18 mins: Mainoo drives at Switzerland, it's been another bright start from the Man United teenager. He gets crowded out in the box and almost ends up getting a piggy back from Akanji.

16 mins: Bellingham on the move, finds Kane. He sets it back to Mainoo, whose drive is blocked. Rice wins the second ball, Schar and Kane have a coming together. The England captain wants a penalty but referee Orsato is not interested.

13 mins: England with possession hut it's slow and ponderous and they have to go back to Pickford. He fizzes a ball into Bellingham. That's reset things nicely. Mainoo to Bellingham, who can't quite thread the ball to Trippier.

9 mins: Walker lets Vargas get the cross in. Konsa with a glancing clearance and Stones a little more authoritatively once the ball comes back in. Switzerland remain camped in the England half.

8 mins: Now Xhaka takes the opportunity to orchestrate a Swiss attack. Ndoye into the box and Mainoo scampers back to mop up well.

7 mins: Switerland struggling to pick up Saka's movements from deep and he brings down a raking ball from Bellingham. The Arsenal man sets the ball back to Walker, whose drilled cross is cleared by Manchester City team-mate Akanji. Now the flag goes up.

5 mins: Switzerland play down the left in slick fashion. Konsa steps in to deny Freuler.

4 mins: Foden knitting things together in the Switzerland half, seeing plenty of the ball early on. Saka takes aim from out on the right but the cross is over-hit.

Kickoff

Off we go. Saka is starting on the right for England. Hmmmm.

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams, walking out to a boisterous atmosphere at the Merkur Spiel-Arena. Anthems time. "God Save the Cheese" reads one Swiss fan's banner. No arguments here.

25 mins before kickoff: Plenty of people are tipping Switzerland to win today and you can make that case beyond England's form, tactical struggles and general neurosis around its national sport. Murat Yakin's side were a stoppage-time equaliser away from beating Germany and clinically dispatched holder Italy in the previous round. Zoom out to Euro 2020 and you see a side that knocked out France and only lost to Spain on penalties. They pushed Brazil all the way in the group stages of the 2022 World Cup before a 6-1 hammering at the hands of Portugal. That's a major outlier for the Swiss against major nations over recent years and England shouldn't expect anything similar.

45 mins before kickoff: Coaches sometimes like to keep their cards close to their chest, keeping opponents guessing over what their strategy might be. Not that any of that is Phil Foden, who's just succinctly outlined the system and the game plan for England when talking to BBC One.

We’ve changed formation to match what they do, to try and get pressure upfield and try and retain the ball. Let’s see if it works, I’m looking forward to it

I’ll be inside, more centrally. It’s what I prefer. If the team in general players well I think the forwards play well. If we get the shape right and the press right it’ll be a lot better, I feel.

1 hour before kickoff: It's as you'd expect from Switzerland, although Fabian Rieder gets the nod as an attacking option at right wingback despite Silvan Widmer returning from suspension.

1 hr 10 mins before kickoff: Here's the England XI. Ezri Konsa in for the suspended Marc Guehi is the only change from the team that edged past Slovakia but it does look like that presumed change is shape will happen. If it does, it means Keiran Trippier and Bukayo Saka starting as the wing-backs. Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luke Shaw are on the bench and obvious wide alternatives in a 3-4-3.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Confirmed team news will be with us shortly and speculation is rife that Gareth Southgate will revert to a back three in an attempt to give his under-achieving stars a spark. Southgate used this shape throughout England's run to the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and reverted to it for the round-of-16 win over Germany and final defeat to Italy on penalties at Euro 2020. It would also have the possible advantage of matching up to Switzerland's system, however Murat Yakin's side look well-grooved to an extent it is hard to imagine England matching after a week on the training ground. Southgate's hope will be to close that gap enough so that the likes of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden have a platform to shine.

Getty Images

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: So, yeah, England haven't really played well at Euro 2024 yet. But maybe they've simply been ahead of the curve. Spain, the competition's form team, were pretty fortunate to burgle an unforgettable last-minute win against hosts Germany yesterday, while Portugal and France were both borderline unwatchable before the latter prevailed on penalties. Playing well? Overrated in tournament football, apparently.

2 hours before kickoff: England haven't yet impressed at Euro 2024, but this is the time to find form: they face an emboldened and competitive Switzerland side who have already put out holders Italy. Can they eliminate the other finalists of Euro 2020?

Centre-back Marc Guehi, who received a second yellow card of the tournament in the last-16 match against Slovakia, is suspended. Ezri Konsa replaces the Crystal Palace man in the only change in personnel from the team that started last weekend, although a switch to a three-man defence is anticipated.

Jude Bellingham will start in midfield after his UEFA investigation into a celebration gesture against Slovakia saw him fined, and issued with only a suspended ban.

England starting lineup (3-4-2-1, right to left): Pickford (GK) —  Walker, Stones,  Konsa —   Trippier, Mainoo, Rice, Saka — Foden, Bellingham — Kane.

England subs (max 15): Ramsdale (GK), Henderson (GK), Shaw, Alexander-Arnold, Dunk, Gallagher, Toney, Gordon, Watkins, Bowen, Eze, Gomez, Palmer, Wharton.

The match also sets up an intriguing midfield battle between Declan Rice of England and Switzerland's Granit Xhaka, who is set to recover from a minor adductor scare.

Swiss coach Murat Yakin welcomes back Silvan Widmer from suspension, although Fabian Rieder gets the nod at right wingback.

Switzerland starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Sommer (GK) — Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez — Rieder, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer — Ndoye, Vargas — Embolo.
