Brazil vs. South Korea final score, result: Neymar and Richarlison shine to secure World Cup quarterfinal spot image

Brazil made a gigantic statement in their quest for a sixth World Cup win with an artful 4-1 demolition of South Korea in the Round of 16.

The Selecao are chasing a first World Cup trophy since Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho swept to glory in 2002 and their first-half display at Stadium 974 was worthy of being a part of that lineage.

Pele, who posted a message of support from his Twitter account saying he would watch on from his hospital bed, might also have recognised something in the wonderful verve of Brazil’s play form the moment Vinicius Jr. coolly found a seventh-minute opener.

Neymar was back from his ankle injury and converted a 13th-minute penalty, while Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta also got in on the act before halftime. Paik Seung-ho ensured the spectacular goals were not limited to Brazil, but this was still a performance to strike fear into quarterfinal opponents Croatia and the rest of the teams remaining in Qatar.

Brazil vs. South Korea final score

  1H 2H Final
Brazil 4 0 4
South Korea 0 1 1

Goals:

BRA — Vinicius Junior (Raphinha) — 7th minute.

BRA — Neymar (penalty) —13th minute.

BRA — Richarlison (Thiago Silva) — 29th minute.

BRA — Paqueta (Vinicius Junior) — 37th minute.

KOR — Paik Seung-ho — 76th minute.

Raphinha was a livewire presence down the right wing all night and brilliantly crafted the opener. After leaving Hwang In-beom on his backside and exchanging passes with Casemiro, the Barcelona winger cut the ball back for Vinicius, who was not perturbed by a cluster of players in the goalmouth and finished high into the net.

Kim Young-gwon brought minimal contact but maximum clumsiness to a challenge on Richarlison and Neymar did the rest from the spot, rolling his penalty home after outfoxing Kim Seung-gyu.

Korea goalkeeper Kim made a succession of fine saves either side of halftime but he could do nothing when Richarlison produced the pick of the goals in the 29th minute.

The Tottenham forward engaged in some one-man head tennis briefly before dummying a pass from Marquinhos to fellow centre-back Thiago Silva. The veteran Chelsea player then laid a perfectly weighted pass on a plate for Richarlison.

Another sweeping team move saw Vinicius chip a cross for Paqueta to emphatically smash home.

Korea stuck to their task after the break and benefitted from a testimonial feel in the closing stage, which featured Brazil’s third-choice goalkeeper Weverton replacing Alisson. The Liverpool No 1 had made a couple of excellent saves from Hwang Hee-chan but had no chance when substitute Paik took aim from 25 yards.

It remains to be seen whether anyone has a chance against this Brazil.

Brazil vs. South Korea as it happened from 2022 World Cup

Fulltime: That's a wrap at Stadium 974, which will shortly be dismantled. In that respect, South Korea played a fitting part in this contest as a brilliant Brazil took them to pieces. Quarterfinal opponents Croatia and every other team left in Qatar are on notice. Thanks for joining us!

90th minute: Hwang Hee-chan bounds into the Brazil box and thrashes over. A goal would be well-earned as he's not stopped raging against an unsalvagable situation.

89th minute: Martinelli gets to the byline and stands up a cross. Alves is there with a spectacular scissors kick but it's deflected behind.

88th minute: Raphinha just doesn't stop. He's on his bike again down the right. Kim Young-gwon heads clear. His ordeal is almost over.

81st minute: Ah, now we're into testimonial mode. Brazil are bringing on third-choice goalkeeper Weverton for Alisson. Rodrygo also comes on for Neymar.

80th minute: Oh, hang on! Cho Gue-sung is through on goal and Alisson saves well. Turns out he was just offside, but Brazil maybe need to wake up a bit.

76th minuteGOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!!!!! Paik Seung-ho!!!!!

It's on!!! I jest, but that's a spendid goal from Paik Seung-ho. Brazil half clear a free-kick and substitute Paik hammers home from 25 yards. Alisson was probably slightly unsighted but he'd have done well to get anywhere near it with a good view.

72nd minute: Tite continues to ring the changes, with Bremer and Martinelli on for Danilo and Vinicius.

67th minute: As good as Brazil have been, they've still needed Alisson to be at his imperious best. The Liverpool number one shows sharp reactions once again to keep out another firmly struck Hwang Hee-chan effort.

65th minute: Left-back Kim Jin-su came off at halftime and was replaced by Hong Chul. At least, I think he was. Has anyone seen Hong? Because Richarlison was the latest Brazil player to merrily make his way through the left-band side of the Korea defence. There was an offside flag eventually.

63rd minute: Eder Militao is on a yellow card from the group stage so Tite sensibly takes the Real Madrid defender from the fray and sends on veteran Dani Alves.

62nd minute: Neymar saunters inside and slips a pass to Raphinha. It's another good save from Kim Seung-gyu, who might be worried that his defenders are spending far too much time watching his duel with Raphinha at this point.

58th minute: Raphinha persuades Neymar to let him have a go. It deflects behind off the top of the wall and Brazil's short corner routine doesn't come to anything.

57th minute: All this is missing is an outrageous Brazil freekick goal. Well, they have one centrally, about 30 yards out...

54th minute: South Korea are 4-0 down and their best player has been their goalkeeper. Kim Seung-gyu again denies a twisting and turning Raphinha. Vinicius is there on the follow up but his strike is deflected behind.

50th minute: Corrrrr, that's some pass from Casemiro, sweeping out to Raphinha on the right. The Barcelona winger's cross is blocked, bounces back into him and it's a goal kick.

47th minute: Chance at the other end. Son Heung-min harries Marquinhos into a mistake and whips a trademark shot towards the far post. Alisson makes himself big and that's an excellent save.

46th minute: We're off again and, within half a minute, Raphinha is sauntering into the Korea box but shoots too close to Kim Seung-gyu. Nice to see you cleared your heads, lads!

Halftime: Well, well, well. That's a hell of a statement from Brazil. You'd think they take the chance to ease off in the second period. If not, this could be absolutely any score.

45th minute+4: Good grief, what on earth are they doing? Have the South Korea defence gone in for halftime already. Richarlison is allowed to romp in from the right unchallenged, straight through on goal. Kim Seung-gyu manages to save with his right boot.

45th minute+2: Close again for Brazil. Vinicius is on the charge again and whips a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Raphinha lunges, waving a boot at it. A headed finish looked like the better bet.

45th minute+1: Raphinha slips a lovely pass through to Paqueta and it should be 5-0. Kim Seung-gyu has a rare moment of success, repelling a tame stabbed effort. He shouldn't have had a chance.

43rd minute: South Korea look to chance their arm with a couple of attacks but the problem with this Brazil team is they have really good centre-backs too. Hopeful balls into the box are meat and drink to Marquinhos.

37th minuteGOOOOAALLLLL!!!!! Paqueta!!!!!

Another sumptuous Brazil goal! South Korea clearly haven't cracked the notion of damage limitation, leaving themselves 4 vs 4 at the back. Vinicius hangs up a delicate chipped cross and Paqueta, who has been excellent, crashes home on the volley.

34th minute: Casemiro whips a long-range effort just wide. It's going to be a long 10 minutes or so until halftime for South Korea, who look completely overwhelmed and out of their depth.

29th minuteGOOOAAAAALLL!!!! Richarlison!!!!!

Beautiful, beautiful football. Full Jogo Bonito. Paqueta starts it on the right. Casemiro chipped a pass forward and Richarlison ends up doing a bit of one-man head tennis. The move continues and the Tottenham forward dummies  Marquinho's pass to Thiago Silva (yep, the two centre-backs). Silva slips through a wonderful ball for Richarlison to score his third of the tournament.

27th minute: Neymar drives at the heart of the Korea defence. He has Vinicius screaming for the ball to his left but uses him as a decoy, eventually winning a corner that comes to nought.

26th minute: Hwang Hee-chan lines up another speculative attempt but this one is more straightforward for Alisson to gather.

23rd minute: Son Heung-min gives away a slightly petulant foul. Understandable frustration for the Korea star and his teammates seem to be caught in two minds, shellshocked by what's unfolded so far. Brazil aren't being pressed to any great extent, yet are able to play through their opponents - especially down the flanks - with ease.

16th minute: Not far away at all from Hwang Hee-chan. South Korea's hero from the Portugal game takes aim from 25 yards and Alisson has to be at full stretch to tip over. It already feels like it will take something special to get Paulo Bento's side back into the game. They almost had just that from Hwang.

13th minuteGOOOOAAALLLLL!!!!!!! Neymar!!!!!!

Available in the US

Available in the UK

Kim Seung-gyu put himself almost next to his right-hand post as he waited for Neymar to take before shuffling centrally. Neymar was more than equal to his antics, sitting the Korean goalkeeper down and slotting nonchalantly into the bottom right corner.

11th minutePenalty to Brazil! Oh dear oh dear, South Korea. Richarlison takes control of a long ball on the left-hand edge of the area. Kim Young-gwon hacks at the ball, misses it and fouls him. In truth, he didn't seem to get much of Richarlison either, but there'll be no monitor review. Neymar to take.

7th minuteGOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!!!! Vinicius Junior!!!!!!

Glorious stuff from Brazil. Raphinha's second involvement is a vast improvement upon his first as he jinks inside, leaves Hwang In-beom on his backside, exchanges passes with Casemiro and darts into the penalty area. The winner rolls a pass across to Vinicius, who coolly takes a touch and makes light of traffic on the goalline to finish in majestic fashion.

4th minute: Not much happening in an attacking sense so far. To that end, Raphinha tries to force a pass through to Paqueta and clumps it out for a goal kick. One he'll be keen to forget.

2 mins from kickoff: Both anthems hammered out with gusto by the players. Let's do this!

9 mins from kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel. Can Brazil remain on course for a blockbuster semifinal against Argentina? Or South Korea better continental rivals Japan and book a place in the quarterfinals with what would be one of the all-time great shocks in the competition.

30 mins from kickoff: So much focus at this World Cup has zeroed in upon whether Lionel Messi can go all the way in his final stab at glory on the biggest stage. It's easy to forget that Neymar is now 30. Especially considering his niggling injury woes, this is almost certainly the last time we see him at a World Cup at the peak of his powers. Lifting the trophy would be a reputation-making act for the playmaking forward, in a manner not really required by his PSG teammate.

1hr from kickoff: Hwang Hee-chan was South Korea's hero with a last-gasp winner against Portugal to book their place in this stage. He's been rewarded with a start by boss Paulo Bento. Kim Min-jae is back at centre-back, which means the all-Kim back four are reunited in front of goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu...to the delight of live bloggers everywhere.

1hr 5 mins from kickoffNEYMAR STARTS FOR BRAZIL! The star number 10 has recovered from his ankle knock and lines up behind Richarlison in attack. Danilo is also back from his own ankle complaint and seemingly. lining up at left-back.

1 hr 15 mins from kickoff: We'll have the team news for you very soon, but the winners of this game now know who they will face in the quarterfinals. Croatia have beaten Japan 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Al Janoub Stadium. Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was Croatia's hero, saving spot kicks from Takumi Minamino, Kaoru Mitoma and Maya Yoshida.

1 hr 45 mins from kickoff: The venue for today's match, Stadium 974, is set to be dismantled after it hosts the game today, its final game of the World Cup.

2 hrs 15 mins from kickoff: There's a big Tottenham connection in this World Cup Round of 16 match. South Korea star Heung Min-Son is the nation's biggest football star, while Richarlison is hoping to bring his World Cup form back to the club level with them. Both are battling for places in North London, with Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski also gaining big minutes up front for Spurs.

2 hrs 40 mins from kickoff: Brazil manager Tite took the rare step of going public with his World Cup roster before contacting his players individually, meaning the players found out at the same time everyone else did. Selecao striker Richarlison was a lock to make the squad, but still, the anticipation must have been nerve-wracking for the player himself until true confirmation.

Richarlison's reaction to finding out his selection was spectacular, and captured fans who got a look at what selection means to him. The Barcelona forward is now a consistent selection for this tournament after his influence against Serbia where he scored a pair, including a goal of the tournament contender.

3 hrs 10 mins from kickoff: One of the most fascinating matchups of this game will come on the flank, where Brazil right winger Raphinha will match up against South Korea's best counter-attacking duo Heung Min-Son and Kim Jin-Su. We've tipped the Barcelona man to score in this game, with Neymar serving as more of a decoy with his fitness less than full.

Here's a full preview of this match with predictions, picks, and best bets.

3 hrs 33 mins from kickoff: Former South Korea international Ji-sung Park, who played for Manchester United during his career, spoke to CNN before the match today, saying that he's hoping for "another shock" against Brazil. Park said he thought Brazil would win the tournament before the World Cup began, and while they fell to defeat in the group finale, "their first and second matches were how they play and how much they're strong," so he's aware of the threat on the other side of the pitch.

Park also admits Brazil "destroyed us" the last time they played, a 5-1 friendly win back in June of this year, but says that match was a "great lesson" for the Korean players heading into today's game.

3 hrs 53 from kickoff: Brazil are facing a difficult injury situation that goes beyond just Neymar. Danilo is also dealing with an ankle injury that's similar to Neymar's, and the team took a dip in midfield without him against Switzerland, where Fred was deployed.

Additionally, Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles have been ruled out for the rest of the tournament with their own issues, and while both are backups as the squad stands, it still affects their depth moving forward.

4 hrs 15 from kickoff: These two sides know that a quarterfinal meeting with either Japan or Croatia awaits, and those two are getting underway in their Round of 16 clash right now. We'd love you to stay with us for the buildup, but if you want to have two tabs on the go you can check out our live blog of that game here!

It's a big day for Asian nations, who will surely be supporting each other as they look to continue a World Cup tournament that's already the best the continent has ever seen, with more teams in the knockout stage (3) than any previous tournament.

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: Tottenham Hotspur will win either way on Monday. One of their stars is moving on no matter what:

5 hrs from kickoff: This whole deal about Neymar being ready to play against South Korea is real. Here he is on the practice field before the match. "If everything goes well [in training] he will play says the coach:

Brazil vs South Korea lineups, team news

Brazil fans will be excited about the news that Neymar and Danilo are back in the picture after picking up knocks in the opener. But that will be offset slightly by the absence of forward Gabriel Jesus and left-back Alex Telles, who won't be available due to knee injuries. Brazil will also be without Alex Sandro, who's dealing with a hip issue, according to Brazilian media.

With both natural left-backs sitting out — Alex Sandro and Alex Telles — it's expected that coach Tite plays right-back Danilo in the left-back spot.

Brazil (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. Alisson (GK) — 14. Eder Militao, 4. Marquinhos, 3. Silva, 2. Danilo — 5. Casemiro, 7. Paqueta — 11. Raphinha, 10. Neymar, 20. Vinicius Jr — 9. Richarlison

South Korea's coach, Paulo Bento, will have a choice to make on the right wing, with the return of World Cup hero Hwang Hee-chan, whose stoppage-time heroics are the reason the Koreans are even here. He may be given the start with other teammates filling in throughout the group matches.

Napoli defender Kim Min-jae sat out the last match due to injury, but the speculation is that he could return for this big match, which could see the Koreans return to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

South Korea (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. Kim Seung-gyu (GK) — 15. Kim Moon-hwan, 4. Kim Min-jae, 19. Kim Young-gwon, 3. Kim Jin-su — 5. Jung Woo-young, 6. Hwang In-beom — 11. Hwang Hee-chan, 10. Lee Jae-sung, 7. Son Heung-min — 9. Cho Gue-sung
