Is there any reserve day for the World Cup 2023 final?
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made provisions for reserve days for the knockout rounds of the Cricket World Cup 2023.
The group stage games did not have any provision for a reserve day, but the knockout matches do have reserve matchdays.
Hence, if the final is interrupted by rain on Sunday it will be played on Monday.
What are the rules of reserve day during the final?
According to the Appendix H of the ICC World Cup rule book, the reserve day is governed by the following rules.
Hours of Play: The Reserve Day follows the same hours of play as the scheduled day, including any extra time provision.
Play Interruption: If play is interrupted on the scheduled day, umpires utilize extra time and may reduce overs to achieve a result on the reserve day.
Minimum Overs: Each team must have the opportunity to bat for a minimum of 20 overs for a result to be achieved.
Abandonment and Reserve Day: If play doesn't resume by the cut-off time on the scheduled day, it's abandoned, and the Reserve Day is used to complete the match.
Recommencement: On the Reserve Day, play recommences assuming the last ball was bowled on the scheduled day. This means that play will continue from where it was abandoned.
Coin Toss: If the coin toss occurs on the scheduled day with no play, the toss result and named teams carry through to the Reserve Day.
Umpires' Decisions: Umpires aim to maximize play on the scheduled day, considering ground, weather, and light conditions, as if no Reserve Day is available. Hence overs will be reduced if rain hits on the scheduled day.
Example 1: Match starts at 50 overs per side and there is an interruption at 19 overs.
Overs are reduced to 46 overs per side and play is about to resume. Before another ball is bowled it rains and play is abandoned for the day. As the match did not resume under the revised overs, the match should continue on the Reserve Day at the original 50 overs per side with the overs reduced if necessary during the Reserve Day.Example 2: The same start as in example 1 i.e. match starts at 50 overs per side and there is an interruption at 19 overs. Overs are reduced to 46 overs per side and play is about to resume. This time, play starts and after an over has been bowled it rains and play is abandoned for the day. As the match has resumed, it is continued on the Reserve Day at 46 overs per side with the overs further reduced if necessary during the Reserve Day.
What happens if the two teams finish on the same score? What are the rules of a super over?
According to clause 16 of the ICC World Cup rule book, these are the rules when the match is a tie.
16.3.1.1
The result of a match shall be a tie when both innings have been completed and the scores are equal.
16.3.1.2
For all matches throughout the event, if the match is tied a Super Over is played. If the Super Over is a tie, then subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. Unless exceptional circumstances arise, there shall be an unlimited number of Super Overs played to achieve a result.

What if the super over is washed out?
According to clause 16.10.4, if following a tie, weather conditions prevent the Super Over from being completed, or if the match is abandoned or a no result at the end of the reserve day, the teams shall be declared joint winners.
Important Rules Governing the Super Over
1. The loss of two wickets shall end the batting team’s one-over innings.
2. The Super Over shall take place on the scheduled day of the match at a time to be determined by the ICC Match Referee. In normal circumstances it shall commence 5 minutes after the conclusion of the match.
3. The team batting second in the match shall bat first in the Super Over.
4. Each Team shall be allowed one unsuccessful player review per innings per Super Over.
5. The captain of the fielding team (or his nominee) shall select the ball with which the fielding team shall bowl its over in the Super Over from the box of spare balls provided by the umpires (which shall include the balls used in the match, but no new balls). The team fielding second may then choose to use the same ball as chosen by the team bowling first or choose another ball from the same box. If the ball needs to be changed, the relevant Playing Conditions as they apply in the match shall also apply in the Super Over.
