It has been close to eight years now that Sunrisers Hyderabad last won the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy when Australian star David Warner led them to the triumph.

The two-time finalists have seen their fate go against them in the recent past. Twice in the past three seasons, SRH finished at the bottom of the table.

The preparations for the IPL 2024 have already begun in full flow. The teams have submitted their lists of retentions and releases.

The Hyderabad-based franchise, have retained 19 players ahead of the auction and will be in the market for a maximum of six players. The IPL 2024 mini auction is scheduled on December 19, 2023, in Dubai.

In this article, The Sporting News explains which players could be on SRH's radar for IPL 2024.

Which players should Sunrisers Hyderabad buy in the IPL 2024 auction?

The Sunrisers Hyderabad have released six players ahead of the IPL 2024. The Hyderabad outfit traded out Mayank Dagar to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for a like-for-like replacement in Shahbaz Ahmed in return. A notable release is that of the headline-maker from the 2023 Auction, Harry Brook.

Following the release of Brook, SRH have a spending capacity of INR 34 Crores. The Orange Army can inculcate a maximum of six players in their squad, including three foreigners.

For the first time in a few years, the SRH squad is looking more-than balanced. The management has decided to go with stability, over an exciting shuffle at the auction table.

The bowling unit is quite stable too. The continuity of the pacers could be one of the biggest strengths of SRH in 2024. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umran Malik, Fazalhaq Faaroqi, and T. Natarajan, are all frontline pacers in the squad. Whereas the duo of Mayank Markande and Washington Sundar will ensure the fate 'turns' into their favour.

SRH's major focus at the auction should be in acquiring overseas talent. They need a replacement for Harry Brook, and at least one specialist spinner, after releasing both Akeal Hossein and Adil Rashid.

Harry Brook

Unless for a management rift, it would make sense for the Sunrisers to get back Brook from the auction table. After his abysmal performance in IPL 2023, Brook would certainly not cost INR 13.25 Crores.

The Englishman is just 24-years-old and could get second-time lucky in the IPL. Brook certainly has the talent - the century against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden is your prime example. It remains to be seen if the SRH management is genuinely keen on Brook or not.

Pat Cummins / Josh Hazlewood

Many believe that the Sunrisers should look to replace Harry Brook at the auction table. But do they really need an overseas batter? The SRH have the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, and Glenn Philipps up their arsenal.

We believe that pursuing a world-class, right-arm pacer would be beneficial for the 2016 IPL champions. They lack a big-name overseas pacer. Marco Jansen had an underwhelming ODI World Cup, and so the management turn their heads away from him.

The SRH have the money in their purse, and should go big at a high-profile Aussie name to boost their pace-bowling unit.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman / Mohammad Nabi

Sunrisers need a replacement for Adil Rashid and Akeal Hossein. They could target at least one of Mohammad Nabi or Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Both Afghan bowlers have been a part of SRH in the past, and so the management could pursue them again, for the 2024 season.

We believe that the Sunrisers have a host of part-time spinners in their squad. All of Glenn Philipps, Aiden Markram, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Abhishek Sharma are all handy bowlers in the T20 format. Thus, going after Mujeeb does become a sensible choice, ahead of Nabi.

Mujeeb also picked eight wickets at the recently concluded ODI World Cup. He could bag big bucks in the 2024 edition, after getting unsold just a year before.
