Mumbai will take on either Vidarbha in the final.
In a captivating semi-final clash of the Ranji Trophy 2024, Vidarbha emerged victorious against Madhya Pradesh (MP), securing a berth in the much-anticipated final showdown. The nail-biting encounter, held at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur, witnessed Vidarbha triumph over their opponents by a margin of 62 runs, propelling them into contention for the prestigious title once again.
Led by the seasoned campaigner Akshay Wadkar, Vidarbha displayed exceptional resilience and skill throughout the semi-final duel, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown against Mumbai, the formidable contenders for the championship crown. Mumbai, with an illustrious history in the Ranji Trophy, will be making their 48th final appearance, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the upcoming clash.
Vidarbha's journey to the final marks a significant milestone in the team's recent history, particularly considering their past successes in the championship. In the 2017-18 and 2018–19 editions of the Ranji Trophy, Vidarbha emerged triumphant, clinching the title in consecutive years by defeating Delhi and Saurashtra, respectively. Notably, Vidarbha's advancement to the final also signifies the second occasion in the tournament's history where teams from the same state have contested the ultimate showdown.
The semi-final encounter against MP unfolded as a closely contested battle, with the outcome hanging in the balance until the final day of play. Heading into the decisive phase, MP found themselves requiring 93 runs with four wickets remaining, setting the stage for a gripping finale.
However, Vidarbha's bowlers showcased their mettle on the crucial day, swiftly dismantling MP's lower-order resistance with clinical precision. In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Vidarbha's duo of Aditya Thakare and Yash Thakur orchestrated the downfall of their opponents, claiming two wickets each to steer their team towards victory.
The decisive blows delivered by Thakare and Thakur culminated in MP's dismissal for 258 runs in 81.3 overs, paving the way for Vidarbha's jubilant celebration and confirmation of their berth in the Ranji Trophy final. The final wicket fell when Kulwant Khejroliya, attempting to stave off defeat, managed a brief cameo, scoring 11 runs off 19 deliveries before succumbing to Thakur's bowling prowess.
With the semi-final triumph secured, Vidarbha now shifts its focus to the highly anticipated final clash against Mumbai, scheduled to commence on Sunday, March 10. As Vidarbha aims to etch their name in the annals of cricketing history with a third Ranji Trophy title, Mumbai harbors aspirations of clinching their 42nd championship crown and their first since the 2015-16 season.
