India recently sealed a historic win in Barbados as they defeated South Africa in the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Final to lift the coveted trophy after a wait of 17 years, and their first bit of ICC success since the Champions Trophy triumph in 2013.

Skipper Rohit Sharma became the first man captain since the legendary MS Dhoni to lead India to ICC glory. Rohit came close in 2023 as well with the rampant Indian team reaching the final of the ODI World Cup winning 10 games on the trot. Unfortunately, in the finals, they were defeated by Pat Cummins’ Australia in front of the home crowd in Ahmedabad.

The T20 World Cup triumph has served as an ointment on that wound, with Rohit taking center stage as captain. The 37-year-old announced his retirement from T20Is following India’s victory in Barbados.

The Men in Blue will be shifting their focus from the shorter format of the game though as the World Test Championship (WTC) will be coming in thick and fast along with the returning ICC Champions Trophy in February 2025. The tournament will be hosted by defending champions, Pakistan.

Rohit is the favourite to lead the team as captain in both formats which was also confirmed by the BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a recent video.

Who will be India's captain at the 2025 Champions Trophy?

Similar to what Shah said about Rohit ahead of the T20 World Cup, stating that he has utter confidence in the Indian team and skipper Rohit Sharma, he has once again stated the same for WTC and Champions Trophy.

After the T20 World Cup win, the next target is to win the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I have full confidence that under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, we will be champions in both the tournaments

After the ongoing T20I series against Zimbabwe, India will be travelling to Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs starting July 27. Shah recently also confirmed that the appointment of a new head coach will be done before the Sri Lanka tour. Former Indian batter and IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders mentor, Gautam Gambhir is the favourite to take over the vacant position.
