David Wiese became the hero for Namibia on Monday morning, as the veteran contributed with both ball and bat as Namibia defeated Oman in a super over thriller in their opening match of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.

Namibia vs Oman: Result and Scorecard

Batting first, Oman put up a below par score of just 109 for Namibia to chase. Ruben Trumpelmann and David Wiese led the charge with the ball for the Namibian side picking up four and three wickets respectively. 

Initially the target seemed to be a cakewalk, but Oman showcased extraordinary fighting spirit to take the game down to the wire. Mehran Khan picked up 3 wickets and conceded just 7 runs to drag Oman back into the game.  With five runs required in the final over, Oman skipper Aqib Ilyas conceded just four runs and picked up two crucial wickets, resulting in a super over.

Wiese took the charge with the bat in his hand, smashing 13 runs off four just deliveries  in the super over, helping Namibia to set a daunting target of 21 runs in six deliveries for Oman to chase. In reply, skipper Gerhard Erasmus gave the ball in Wiese’s hand and Wiese repaid the skipper’s faith by conceding just 10 runs and picking up a wicket. 

Despite Oman’s fighting effort, Namibia were successful in winning their opening game of the 2024 T20 World Cup opening campaign.

Who is David Wiese?

Wiese a South-African born cricketer and the now 39-year-old initially represented South-Africa in international cricket. Wiese made his international debut in T20I cricket against Sri LLanka and represented the South-African team in the 2016 T20 World Cup as well, which was played in India.

He was later dropped from the team due to poor performances and then dropped altogether when Wiese signed the Kolpak deal and played for Sussex. Later in 2021, Wiese made his debut with the Namibian cricket team, also representing them in the 2021 T20 World Cup and helping them win their first ever ame in an ICC event against Netherlands. 

Wiese became eligible to play for Namibia because of his Father’s Namibian nationality. He became the the fifteenth player in the cricketing world to represent two different national teams.
